Hola Amigos,
Recently purchased a couple of trees here in southern Ecuador, Vilcabamba area. The nurseryman called it a Mamey Zapote. It's clearly not Pouteria Sapota, the very tasty Central American Mamey.
Here it is known as Ecuadorian Mamey Zapote. Looks to me like Garcinia Macrophylla or Magnifolia? I'm told it likes full sun and little to moderate watering, probably due to its somewhat thick and waxy leaves.
Looking through various threads here on the Forum, the consensus seems to be that there are quite a few varieties of South American Garcinias, with no real clear classification. I haven't seen nor tasted any Ecuadorian Mamey fruit. From Mike's description here (
