The San Jose Lowes and Home Depot carry Strawberry, Lemon, White Mexican, Pink and some Malaysian (single branch graft)
If you're there the day of arrival, you can likely get one with a fruit dangling, if not one with flower clusters. Can't beat that 1 year guarantee!

I leave all my guavas outdoors, temps drop to high 20's low 30's.
Their leaves turn black and do not completely defoliate.

Come spring they bounce back and explode in growth.
Most of the guavas you buy from the store are either air-layered grafted, just ask to make sure.

I have a serious problem with Frank.

He's too nice and his mom won't stop giving me her Guava Jam!
Rest assured, if anything is wrong with your order Frank will take care of you, just be patient.
We should actually be thankful someone like him is offering rare scions to us.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Would you accept a tree in this condition?
« on: February 25, 2019, 07:12:02 PM »
Wanted to chime in on my experience with them.

Spent 4 digits on their stuff and the largest container was 3 gallons.
Half of the trees purchased, were not even qualified for 3 gallons, they were suitable for 1 gallon after repotting them.

Purchased Taiwan Jujube on their site, died in 2 weeks.
The scion that was grafted looked like it was growing, it was actually not. Just a branch from the tree posing to look like it took.
Four other Guavas, same problem. Trees sold weren't successful takes and they're being sold with no guarantee.
Bunch of other stuff was purchased, many of them died, grafts died, rootstock survived.

They're located right behind Champa and from what I was told not a registered nursery.
All grafts were exactly the same on all trees, regardless of scion/rootstock sizing, bark/side veneer graft.
Some looked good, others look like it was done by a blind person.
Grafting material was just a clear garden tape.
Local pickup is not allowed, they are very shady and lie about sending you the best quality.
If that was the case they'd provide you accurate pictures of the stuff you've purchased before sending you one they neglected for so long.
They are members of this forum and lurking this thread, that's why you received your refund so quickly.

Overall experience, I waste my money and time, they came off very rude and that should have been a red flag.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 52 degrees, too cold for potted tropical?
« on: October 09, 2018, 01:07:17 PM »
Most of my tropicals (Before I'm corrected, Sub-Tropicals) are brought down to low 30's here, wind chill is even lower.
They just go dormant, do not water and check the soil as it is very important bugs, fungus, mold, etc doesn't build up.

Never tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't.
Grafting is the best method.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Japanese Plum, Ume

Does anyone know where I can find this locally, or at least ships to California?

Thanks!

Yes, I think my tree might be too young to handle flowers and hopefully next year it will be fine.
Also I think grafting is a great idea but I am an absolute fruit tree novice so grafting is for me like practicing magic. I read about it, watched YouTube videos and plan to buy special knife - but will I be ever able to make a cut? That’s another story.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and ideas. I really appreciate.

I had the same problem with mine, it's in a 25g container.
The problem is the dry weather and heat, then cold nights and extremely hot afternoons.
The inconsistent weather affects many of our tropical/sub-tropical trees.
My mangoes were starting to split too :(

They're a bit more sensitive when it comes with dry winds.
Keep it watered 3-4 times a week with good humidity to prevent it.

A second bloom is popping up, sadly the first bloom was intense!
More flowers than there were leaves with small fruit sets.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Missile Wax Apple - Dying?
« on: July 11, 2018, 11:37:08 AM »
Sounds like root shock to me when it was trimmed, it'll definitely defoliate due to lack of sufficient energy.
I recommend keeping it in shade with the vented bag to assist with humidity.

Due to plant shock, you will likely see a late flush this year.
Give it time, and it should recover.

The scratch test should be less aggressive though :)
Those wounds look very deep, enough to see bark.

I have a few scions available if you like.
All from a flowering mother tree, or fruiting.

- Alano
- Black
- Green
- Ross
- Suebelle
- Vernon

400-500 is better than waiting for X unknown years to even see flowers.
I'd fork out $2000 for one that bears fruit, that money can easily be made not, a thriving Jabo.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Sapote, should I uproot it?
« on: May 14, 2018, 12:49:59 PM »
Let me guess, the tree was simply labeled "Sapote" where you bought it?

There are 4 million and one fruits with "Sapote" in the name and yet people still go around calling some of them simply "Sapote" as if it's the only sapote on earth.

For the love of pete, people, stop it!

Lol, so true.  I've seen this happen on other sites and groups far too often.  It's like buying a tree labeled "Fruit"  ;)

Some nurseries lose tags through transit, customers swapping tags for discounts among other things.
So they are unable to provide an accurate ID and end up with a generalized ID.
Why not take advantage of the situation and ask for a discount due to the inaccuracy ID of the tree, quid pro quo.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tamarind in CA?
« on: May 14, 2018, 12:35:58 PM »
I have one here in that resides in a greenhouse during temps below 40.
Even at that stage it's not a suitable condition for the tamarind.

I too eat the fresh leaves, it tastes really tart like tamarind.
Asian folks use it for cooking like myself.

- Tamarind Leaves
- Kaffir Lime leaves
- Ginger
- Galangal
- Garlic
+ a few other ingredients makes a great Thai soup
