Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Another banner year for Rollinia coming
« on: January 18, 2025, 09:49:38 AM »
How big is it and how much water do you give it? Mine is in the ground and can have branch die off in winter if it gets water stress during our dry season.

Is yours in a pot?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: is this front yard jackfruit fair game?

Property owners do not always have the right to have fences in their front yard, and if they do often times they are required to have a setback from the street either by city ordinances or association rules.

It doesn't change the FACT that what THEY planted was on THEIR property for THEIR use AND consumption is NOT for trespassers to steal. Morons who traipse around ASSuming they have some divine given right to TAKE fruit are wrong.

What are you folks who grow Rollinia seeing? Mine is doing well and as expected fruits are ranging from quarter size to the size of a hard baseball and more flowers erupting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Canistel Flavor Test (Lara Farms)

Before I got my Fairchild #2 I had only tried one other supposedly a Bruce. The #2 was the first tree I saw in person and bought it on the spot.

As far as it being a compact grower goes, yes and no. The trunk stays rather small but its upward growth habit is very tall.

Mine is in ground 15+ years and I topped it once and needs it again... sooner than later.

It produces a lot of fruit, so much I have to give a LOT away!

I often crack one open and sit in my yard spooning the moist flesh into my mouth. I love this tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air layer Q's

When an airlayered branch has been detached from the source tree and planted should it be cut back, defoliated, neither or both? If it needs trimming and or leaf removal how much?

My first canistel tasting was a Bruce, I liked it fine but heard enough about the Fairchild #2 and bought one, and I am not sorry.

The only "problem" with it is if fruit drops into my ground cover I get many volunteers to pull out.

How much ash do you need? I get a lot from oak and fruit trees that I burn in my firepit and I'm not far away in Coral Springs.

The site for some reason is still very S-L-O-W. On a lark I loaded it then went to lunch checking it the page load progress, after 10 minutes I ate and when I came back it was up. I did not have the patience to try to go further.

Lancetilla and Carrie are disappointing to everyone I know who has had them, myself included.

I found Rollinia easy to germinate. I toss them uncleaned into a pot 1/2 " under the soil, keep moist and they sprout like a Chia pet

There are many in 10a here in Florida. Some older ones decently productive, but for the most part don't take the cold well. In my experience they need plenty of regular nutrition and irrigation.

The only folks I've known to have productive trees had several nearby for cross pollination.

I have had three, one inexplicably died though be all outward appearances it was healthy the other two have never fruited. I'm about to kill them off, the largest was bought in a 5 gallon and put in ground in 2015 it budded once 7 or 8 years ago and it never budded again. I'm told you have to have more than a few to get them to pollinate.

IMO, the bottom line is there are better fruits available to spend time and resources on.

Dunno, I have not repotted it yet, but by the appearance of the  robust new growth that it's pushing I suspect they're in pretty good shape.

Are the trees between others getting a lot of sun or filtered light?

Lots of sun because everything is still young. My strategy was to overplant and let the trees compete.>>SNIP<<

Good plan... I over planted also but in my case I was not sure what I'd like after they gave up fruit and overplanting left me the option to try more fruits and pull what did not make the grade.

Here in Florida I've only ever seen Ruby X Supreme guava at Lowe's. Maybe some other nursery suppliers are bringing in other varieties for them to sell, but at a big box store you are generally going to get the more universal options.

For 11 bucks, I would take a shot. Guava grows fast and fruits fast so I treat them like temporary trees anyway. They are dotted in between my bigger trees so I can get some fruit while I wait for my mangoes to grow. It also helps that I really like guava.

Are the trees between others getting a lot of sun or filtered light?

This?

"Who would have predicted you could toss a gopher in for a day and see a residual effect 40 years later"

What did they do? Go back 24 hours later and trap them all?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Long term impacts of gopher baskets?
« on: November 13, 2024, 10:56:40 AM »
I think that the mesh is wide enough for roots to grow through and eventually when / if the wire weakens they will break the wire without too much effort.

As far as rusting goes, I have some 1/2" galvanized mesh over my fire pit for drying / warming wood for the fire that's been there 15+ years and has not rusted. On the other hand I have had some galvanized chicken wire that rusted out above ground in ~5 years, so I guess the quality and thickness of the wire and coating determine it's longevity.

If I had gophers like my GF does who is only 30 miles from me I'd put out traps.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Would you buy an unnamed fruit tree?
« on: November 13, 2024, 10:45:44 AM »
Yesterday I was in Lowes and they had an unusually nicely shaped guava (upward growth habit like a tree and not a bush) in a 5 gallon container at ~5' tall that had experienced and had fully recovered from a water deficiency but it had no cultivar or price stickers attached  to it.

Most of the other samples in stock were marked with price but not cultivar but were small in 1 gallon containers and $29. Since this one was the only fairly large one a manager priced it at $11 so I took it home. Sure it could be a dud like some of those I bought there marked "Mexican Cream" which were hard and bland but I figured I'd take a chance.

The question is, would any of you take a chance and buy a good sized and healthy fruit tree that is priced reasonably and not marked with the cultivar?

Down here in southeast Fla the storms have passed well to the west of us. I hope this one hits cooler water and evaporates for those on the gulf coast.
