Is anyone growing this ginger ?

The Weird Explorer to TFF pipeline is still strong I see  ;D

I'm in for my order as long as it happens in the next week or two, but not if there's another four month delay.  If it drags on much longer the weather in my location will be freezing by the time the seeds clear customs and the second round of shipping, which doesn't work well for tropical seeds  :(

They just arrived and are much bigger than expected! Thanks so much!  :D  Hopefully they don't grow too big too quickly, haha

Haven't ordered from this shop but reviews look good?

They have non-germinated as well.

Did he ever get back to you on this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: USDA Miami APHIS Inspection Issues
« on: June 30, 2025, 06:18:25 PM »

I recently imported some seeds from Mexico through Miami APHIS.
It took almost two weeks from when they arrived at the PO box until they were released.
The seeds were forwarded to me without receiving an inspection report.

The day AFTER the seeds were received, a Florida Ag inspector showed up on my doorstep.
I showed them the seeds (after I told them the species).
Luckily the seeds were not planted, but were no longer in the original package.
Right after that I got the inspection report in my email, showing my shipment "passed".

From my discussion with the Ag inspector, it sounds like they are having staffing issues in Miami.
This is the first time I've imported seeds, so I cannot compare it to previous experience.
But I have another package coming in a week or so. . .   I hope it gets better.

Wow, that sounds rough. Thanks for sharing your experience. I must have caused enough of a ruckus leaving them voicemails because they finally got back to me today with the inspection results. Hopefully I don't get the complimentary state AG inspection that you got  :-X

Tropical Fruit Discussion / USDA Miami APHIS Inspection Issues
« on: June 30, 2025, 09:30:12 AM »
I was wondering if any other members have recently received international shipments through the Miami APHIS inspection station recently? I had a package that was delivered there a little while ago from another forum member, but I never received word of inspection results. All my attempts to check the status have been ignored by email and phone, and from talking to several different employees it doesn't sounds like there's anyone even staffing the inspection department while some people are on vacation. In the past I've had great luck with this inspection stations, so I was curious if any others have been having the same experience?

Hi.  Miguel in Portugal often has seeds for sale.  Seems like some of them are improved varieties.
However, twice in my life I've had the Fed's visit me due to international purchases.  (When I lived in Virginia 15 years ago, had purchased seeds on eBay from a Chilean seller.  Apparently not all of his seeds were legit and was throwing in some noxious weeds.  Luckily, nothing i bought germinated but that didn't stop the feds from coming to my house twice.  Once to do a general check, 2nd time to do a thorough check of my yard.  And then about 10 years ago, I purchased from Thailand 2 supposed improved varieties of wax apples.  Even though they came with sanitary certificate, the feds said there were bugs coming over from Thailand.  Some, I had to double bag the small tree and put it on my front porch for them to collect and incinerate.  I told the man that I enjoyed collecting rare fruit trees and he advised me to only purchase from within USA territory.)
So, I kind of feel like I am on a list somewhere in DC and I don't want to oress my luck.
That's why I am asking if anyone regularly gets seeds from Portugal, can we work out where we split the cost and split the seeds but they get sent to you.  I live in Scottsdale, AZ if anyone close to me buts them, if not I guess can be anywhere in USA.

Who is Miguel? I want to buy from him. Since I'm in the EU it is best

Shop link is https://www.etsy.com/shop/Jibrilenterprisegh (if you right click and select or inspect the HTML you can grab the URLs - they are formatted improperly for the forum markup).

I would be interested in getting Dioscoreophyllum cumminsii seeds.

Just sent payment and permit/labels, thank you!

Definitely a scam, from the ChatGPT images and ridiculous item quantities to the horrendous SEO Shopify template.

Note the address:

Seed Panda LLC ,1309 COFFEEN AVE STE 1200SHERIDAN WY 82801

This address is reused for dozens of scam companies. Take a look in Google maps:

A little update on my one and only fruit almost 4 months from my last post. Certainly taking it's time... I can't imagine it takes this long to ripen after the tree matures. Or does it?

It's about 1/2" wide and just started turning red. I assume it's eventually turning purple/black

Did you ever get the chance to taste it?

Really hate to do this, but posting here to warn others considering doing business with this user. This vendor charged me nearly $100 USD for express shipping/handling and then mislabeled the package (despite me telling them that their USDA inspection station address was wrong) causing it to arrive extremely delayed with nearly all specimens rotten. All fresh seeds were soaked and packaged in wood shavings; not a great combo. The USDA rejected several and it's clear most of the remainder aren't going to germinate (although thankfully a couple seeds did). This would be frustrating on its own, but the kicker is that the vendor neglected to send one of two species that were the whole reason I placed the order in the first place (and others were rotted, womp womp). When I highlighted the discrepancy between my payment invoice and my shipping invoice, they ghosted me. A fitting end to a nearly 3 month ordeal.

TL;DR - While I got a few viable seeds out of my several hundred dollar order, the vendor didn't ship items I paid for. I would strongly recommend against purchasing from this user.

I'm not sure if the flower is right. Does it look like this?
https://galensgarden.co.uk/herbs-and-homoeopathy/herbs-for-herbivores/cats-claw-uncaria-tomentosa/

No, unfortunately that's Pereskia aculeata. Funnily enough there's an old thread on here where Luc had it growing wild on his property and complained he had to cut it back regularly, haha.

Was gonna grab some but Exoteninsel claims the germination rate of seeds is pretty low (although they have a vested interest since they were selling plants): https://www.exoteninsel.com/Red-Sapote-maybe-Timonius-minahassae-1-small-potted-plant-1-kleine-getopfte-Pflanze/EI10945

Capparis masaikai and Curculigo latifolia would make nice additions to the list.

There's a commercial brand of chocolate called Oobli using this for sweetening that might be worth trying 😋

I think Joe Hewitt just posted a picture of some that he's growing, so he might know of a source for seeds. It also might be worth asking Forest House Cameroon or Ferdy Manga if they have access. Good luck!

Capparis masaikai looks delicious!  That is so cool to know about.  Thank you for mentioning it!  Do you know how cold hardy it is?  Capparis spinosa, which is in the same genus, is supposed to be hardy to about zone 8b (15 degrees F).  If it's an 8b plant, I could probably get away with growing it in an unheated greenhouse.

Curculigo latifolia sounds even better.  Wikipedia says the fruit has the same effect as miracle fruit?  Wow!  Sign me up!

Do you know where I could get viable seeds of either of those to try?

They're from a subtropical area, so I think it's unlikely to survive in that zone without supplemental heat. There's some more info on it here: http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200009170

Unfortunately I haven't found a source for non-dried seed, and I hear they need to be pretty fresh to be viable.

For C. latifolia, I've found a fair number of sources of both seeds and plants:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/405203933810
https://nusaplant.com/products/curculigo-latifolia-variegata
https://www.rarepalmseeds.com/curculigo-latifolia-var-latifolia
In CA and FL nurseries carry them, and I believe a few forum members are growing it.

Cheers!
