Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Favorite Passiflora

Wow! What does setacea taste like? Is it sweeter than edulis or is it also sour and fragrant? I am thinking of ordering some seeds off of tradewinds fruit.

Lmao same I’m also on my Passiflora arc right now. I don’t grow too many but I have Edulis, Ligularis (pain in the ass), phoenicea “ruby glow”, x “purple tiger”, x “scarlet flame”(mislabeled as vitifolia at Home Depot), x “Ava”, molissima, and I recently got some small plants of maliformis, quadriglandulosa, malacophylla, mucronata, and matthewsii.

I’ve only managed to fruit edulis, x “victoria” x “Purple Tiger”, and x “Ava” but PT and Ava haven’t ripened yet.
I have only tasted edulis, ligularis and x “Victoria”
Passiflora “Victoria” was NASTY. Tastes like mildly sweet burning plastic and coconut. I pollinated it with a caerulea down the road from me and it set fruit.

I would really like to get my hands on quadrangularis, alata, umbilicata, cumbalensis, ampullacea, parritae, antioquiensis and membranacea. Everything about Passifloras are just so cool except susceptibility to spider mites and nematodes.
If I get some more plants though idk what imma do when I move out to college.

Awesome, dude!!! That is so cool!!!!! I wish you success!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Annona/Atemoya seed Germination
« on: December 19, 2024, 06:52:11 PM »
Here is my method for growing cherimoya and atemoya seeds. I haven’t tried it with other annonas but for Cherimoyas and Atemoyas I get good success.

I will soak the seeds for about a week on a heat mat, changing water every day. Sometimes when I change the water I will rinse with a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide before I add new water to kill any harmful fungus

Fill a plastic shoebox with 50/50 perlite and coco coir. I use water from hot water machine to rehydrate coconut coir and put wet perlite into microwave to sterilize and kill any bugs because I germinate the seeds in my house. Then I mix the coir and perlite together and let it cool down in the plastic shoebox.

Once the mixture has cooled I will make rows of holes around the depth of the seed and space them according to how many seeds I have.

I will plant them hole side down, and cover the seeds until I can only see the rounded edge of the seed.

I will place another plastic shoebox on top, secure it with a rubber band, and offset it slightly to have some air circulation.

Finally I put them on a heat mat and under grow lights and they should come up within a couple of weeks for fresh seed. I have never used dried seed with this method.

Once they have sprouted and grown some true leaves, I transplant them into used party cups with holes outside and use a mixture of cactus mix and perlite and let them grow throughout the season.

I hope this helps!

Here are the results of sugar apple seeds a little over a month! So far 43/60 are showing signs of germination or have germinated

Most of the time the seeds pop up on stems after one month for me. Sometimes there are stragglers which may come after a couple months but most germinate at the same time for me.

I think #1 is cherimoya because of their general shape and color. The underside of the young leaves also looks a bit pubescent, which I’ve noticed on all my cherimoyas.  I’ve been growing cherimoya from seeds for 3 years now. Species #2 looks like soursop because of the glossy leaves. I have no experience with Rollinia though so take my word with a grain of salt. I hope this helps! Good luck!

No, if you plant the same clone then you will not get any more fruit than you have now. I suggest planting closely related species or hybrids such as P. quadrangularis, P.phoenicea, P. x decaisnea, p. “Purple Tiger”, or P.caerulea which is a good universal passiflora pollinator. If you want another alata, you must find a different clone of it (not a propagation of the same origin as yours).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is this Papaya cultivar?
« on: November 13, 2024, 09:31:11 PM »
While I was in Guam a few months back, I visited my uncle and he had a tree loaded with huge round papayas, about the size of a bowling ball. The flesh ripened to a reddish-orange color and was nice and sweet with no weird flavor. Can anyone identify this cultivar?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora “Ava”
« on: October 06, 2024, 09:10:40 PM »
Does anyone know the lineage of Passiflora “Ava”? I picked one up at Armstrong nursery in Encinitas. Thank you!

Here in Southern California, cherimoyas grow phenomenally and some start bearing fruit and flowering at three years from seed if cared for well.

18
I grow them fine in San Diego near the coast where we only get 80-100 chill hours. I hand pollinate and have a few varieties that may do better in a warmer climate.
May I ask what varieties you have? I also live in the SD area and am interested in growing them

There is an app called “INaturalist” where people log down organisms and their locations. Sometimes fruiting plants pop up. You can also use it to see the range of certain species. Super cool!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Banana tree snapped
« on: September 10, 2024, 11:31:41 PM »
To ease up on the weight after the flowers turn to fruit I lop off the bulbous end of unopened flowers. I use a 1x4 with a V notch cut into it to support the fruit. If the plant leans I either tie it to another tree or fence or prop it up with a 1x2. I never had one break.
I did the same. I guess the bananas just got too heavy :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana tree snapped
« on: September 10, 2024, 08:10:05 PM »

My banana tree snapped :(
Both the pseudostem and the peduncle snapped. The tree was leaning heavily for the past month, so I bought some stakes from Home Depot and propped it up last week. However, the part of the tree around a foot and a half above the support kept bending down, and today it finally gave out, and as that snapped, the curved peduncle also snapped under the weight of the fruit. What can I do next time to prevent this? Also there was no signs of ripening in the fruit, so do yall have recipe suggestions for unripe bananas?

Looks like a cherimoya (Annona cherimola) or an atemoya with a high percentage of cherimoya ancestry due to the rounder leaves.

I agree with P.foetida because of those hairy bracts and red fruit. Could be wrong, am not an expert on this subject.

I’m not so sure, but I think it is something in the genus Canarium.

Hello y'all! I am from North San Diego County, California, Zone 10a. I love trying exotic fruits, and I especially like trying to grow them. Although my username is JackfruitChan2, my favorite fruits are in the annonaceae family. I grow several fruits such as Wax apple "Thai Jumbo", Yuzu, Finger Lime, Calamansi, Oroblanco, Buddha's Hand, Kumquat "Nagami" and "Meiwa", Lemons, Jaboticaba, Surinam Cherry, Strawberry Guava, Lemon Guava, Pineapple Guava, Bananas "Apple" and some other unknown variety, Cherimoya, Sugar Apple "Na Dai", Soursop, Achacha, Figs "Little Miss Figgy" and "Kadota", Dragonfruit, Coffee, and Passionfruit. A lot of these plants are very young or are grown from seed, so none but the citrus are fruiting yet. I hope to learn more about fruit and I hope to grow more too! :)
