Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Giant soursop
« on: October 01, 2024, 12:09:30 PM »
Most commercial varieties in Central and South America have the ability to produce fruit of that size.
Costa Rican Giant
Salvadorian Giant
Brazilian Giant

I grow a few in my farm in Belize. Salvadorian Giant Produces the best while the Brazilian is the worst. These are all Sweet types which are ok eating out of hand and juicing. The sub-acidic types are the best for ice creams since a little pulp goes a long way and gives the ice cream a very pronounced flavour.
The Costa Rican ones seem to be the same as the Salvadorian types in every aspect. Hand Pollination is a must for guaranteeing big fruit.
The one that I'd love to get my hands on is Frutimundo's Ecuadorian Giant. They say it might have more of the subacidic types flavors than the sweet type.
There is also a Acidic type of soursop aka the wild version. Those produce small fruit and a super fibrous. These types have pretty much disappeared until I visited a abandoned farm recently and foun 2 trees that were over 75yrs old. Might get some budwood and graft later this yr.

Lara Farms offers grafted trees of a Giant Soursop but last time I messaged Julian he hadn't gotten any mature fruit. He currently has available. I think his budwood came from PR or CR. I don't remember.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Does anyone have a "Mini" Mango tree
« on: August 30, 2024, 02:59:12 PM »
You mean a mango tree that produces mini fruit?
Yeah I’ve seen one tree like that in Belize.
Was in an abandoned farm in the north. The old man who owned it was a collector and though his collection wasn’t impressive it did have 2 mango trees that impressed me. One was a mini mango the size of a Mexican lime like you are looking for. The flavor was the same as Haden. Classic but had a bit of fiber. Matured yellow with a reddish blush. It was like if someone took a Haden mango and shrunk it. The tree wasn’t large compared to other seedlings. All trees were at least 20 to 30yrs old but this one was the shortest at around 10 ft tall and 25 wide.
I’ll try grafting a tree there to preserve this cultivar when I go back this year for vacation.

The other tree that impressed me was a Keitt seedling that held fruit consistently till December according to local fruit thieves. It was flowering in June when I saw it. Been there twice since I own the adjacent property.

Lara Farms sells a variety called Toledo which is suppose to be mini from Cuba or somewhere. Not sure if it is a mini as the one I saw. Flavor would be different since some say it is a Number 11 or Blackie seedling. Not sure if it is.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia Variety Question
« on: August 02, 2024, 11:09:55 PM »
Any variation in terms of flavor intensity? I've had a few rollinias but most lack complexity and sweetness. I eat a couple pieces and then I get bored of it. like if it needs more umph! Anyone knows of a variety that might have that characteristic?

Bellamy had some seeds for sale of a variety they called Doce from Juliano Leite but they were scooped before I could buy any. it was described as being sweeter than the average rollinia.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugarapple Question
« on: August 02, 2024, 11:04:46 PM »
Hi. I've been growing standard squamosa for a few years now. I love the fruit however I was wondering if there were any varieties that we big.

I remember a few years ago member JF offered a Yucatan Giant variety. Anyone ever fruited this variety or anything similar in size?
