Tropical Fruit Discussion / Swimming pool container for fruit trees
« on: January 10, 2025, 11:05:30 AM »
Hi All, I have a swimming pool at my house that I’m interested in converting to more planting area. There are three options for pool demolition:
(1) break up the bottom and fill with soil
(2) partial pool demolition-break up the bottom and sides 2 ft down and remove the surrounding patio
(3) full pool demolition-remove entire pool and all the concrete

I’m thinking of going with option (1) because I'm very concerned about the amount of concrete dust that will be generated and concerned about damage to my existing trees. I have multiple trees planted near the pool patio.

Here are my questions. For a swimming pool with bottom broken up and no other concrete removed (option 1):

Would trees grow OK inside the swimming pool? Would they get root bound? Would they thrive long term or only for a certain number of years? How many trees could i plant inside? Would the pool container be hot and dry inside like regular containers, or no problems like this because it’s in ground? Would only certain types of trees be ok inside the pool (ex: mango but not jackfruit, etc)? Will the concrete dust from the demolition (hopefully not that much if it’s only the bottom being broken up) affect the trees that I already have (getting on leaves, flowers, etc) and should i take steps to protect them?

If anyone has any experience with this or advice please let me know. I will attach a google image of my yard.  Unfortunately my yard is big but the prior owner filled it with concrete. You can also private message me if you have any advice.

I have 7-8 cocos that I've planted that are now starting to fruit.  I can have my lawn guy open coconuts for free with a machete but he only comes every other week.  It would be nice to be able to open coconuts on my own to drink every day and use the meat in recipes/smoothies.  I've looked for machines like this in the past and nothing like this has ever become available to US buyers.

Would lead paint or other chemicals in the machine be a concern if it's coming from India?  Do I need to worry about some plant virus or pest coming over with the package?

Or should I try to learn to use a machete myself?  I'm small and out of shape so not sure if it's possible, also I don't want to take risks of hurting myself.

I just don't want a chlorine swimming pool anymore (it came with the house I live in).  I have many fruit trees planted close and all around the pool.  Would like to get rid of the pool but would it be possible to do without damaging all the nearby trees?  The other option is to convert it to a natural swimming pool but I don't know much about these.

I had some mulch delivered to my house and a very heavy truck drove very close to a young coconut palm I have.  What are the chances the tree will be OK? :(

Will post a picture soon if the site lets me.

Is anyone seeing a lot of (or more than in the past) water accumulation in your neighborhood?  My street never had this issue before, I specifically bought a house that wasn't in a flood zone, but this rainy season is different.  Huge puddles are flooding the streets.  It seems like climate change is here.  Also the cold weather today is strange for this time of year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Butterscotch sapodilla questions
« on: May 11, 2023, 09:43:04 AM »
I have a Haysa sapodilla and want to get a second sapodilla as a pollinator.

When does Butterscotch flower - would it be flowering at the same time as Haysa?

When does Butterscotch have it's fruit maturing?

For those who have Butterscotch sapodilla - how does it taste compared to Haysa?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango weed wacker damage
« on: April 27, 2023, 09:12:18 PM »
I'm devastated right now...I've lost about 10 mangoes to weed wacker damage from my lawn guy.  I feel so sad.  Some mangoes are still attached but have deep marks on them from the weed wacker.  Should I remove these mangoes or will they be able to recover?

I'm going to spend all my free time this weekend putting down cardboard and clearing around trees  :'(  :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pressure cleaning & fruit trees
« on: April 25, 2023, 10:10:10 AM »
I am planning to have someone come to do some pressure cleaning on my back patio (and pressure cleaning the sides of the house).  I have a lot of fruit trees nearby.  I'm going to make sure they don't use anything other than water in the pressure cleaning and don't touch the trees with the pressure cleaner.  Is this generally OK or should I not do pressure cleaning?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana rope for ripening a rack of bananas
« on: April 05, 2023, 09:50:58 AM »
I have 3 large namwah banana bunches that will be taken down soon.  How do I set up the rope holder for bananas so that I can ripen the entire bunch outside and take bananas off as they ripen without them getting damaged?  Any tips on setting this up will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

There are many books about gardening but a lot of them relate to gardening in areas with frost.  Are there any good books about gardening, homesteading or farming in tropical areas or south florida?

Paul Nison posted a video awhile back about growing watermelon during the South FL summer.  He mentioned georgia rattlesnake as the variety in the comments.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  What month should I plant the seeds?  What varieties have you grown?

Share your ideas on what vegetables to plant over the summer that actually taste good & are productive.

Basil - all types.  Thai, Genovese are what I've tried.  I'm going to try lettuce leaf basil & red basil this summer.
Lemongrass
Mint
Pepper - Habanada & Cubanelle
Eggplant - ping tung long (does not set fruit in hottest part of summer but plant survives & produces after/before the ends of the regular growing season).  Tempted to try thai frog egg & chinese string from Baker Creek.
Green Papaya
Okra - tried it before and didn't like the taste/texture, but will try again this year with new recipes
Garlic Chives
Bottle Gourd - tried it last year and it only set one fruit.  Anyone know where to get seed that can produce better in the heat?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can lychee erinose mite infect humans?
« on: February 14, 2023, 10:43:06 AM »
I was working outside in my garden wearing a tank top and when I came inside I noticed a cluster of red bumps on my arm around the size of a penny.  This was in Sept-Oct 2022 and now the rash has expanded to be around the size of a dollar bill approximately and is made up of spreading bumps that are not as red as they were initially.  I have a lychee tree in my yard with LEM and I was wondering if it's possible that the mites from LEM are infecting my arm (similar to scabies, but caused by LEM)?  If anyone knows of anything from the outside in South Florida that could cause a rash that has been growing/expanding for 5-6 months let me know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango fungus help
« on: October 19, 2022, 12:15:03 PM »
This black mold/fungus started on my Glenn tree and now is on my Pickering as well. It starts as one spot and spreads. Is this damaging to the tree? What is this? Do I need to remove these trees to prevent it from spreading to my other mangoes? :(

Can anyone help?  I ordered Microthiol Disperss Fungicide 30 lb bag (Galatians recommended this).  Can Galatians or anyone else on the forum help - the bag only has how much to use per acre - we want to spray a single lychee tree (for Lychee erinose mite) using a 4 gallon backpack sprayer.  How much product do we use per gallon?

Thanks so much in advance.

22
How is everyone handling the lychee erinose mite in Florida?  I love my lychee tree so much - 9 years old and fruited for the first time last summer - I'd be so sad to get rid of it but also realistically lychees don't fruit every year, with climate change I might never get another lychee harvest, and it will be a hassle/expense to spray frequently a large tree.

$10 for 10 seeds + $5 shipping

PM me if you are interested.  Thank you!

There are ants on my red custard apple flowers and all the flowers are not setting fruit yet.  The tree is not at full size, it's about 1-2 yrs old, this is the first time it's flowering.  Are the ants causing any issues?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mysore vs Raja Puri vs Pisang Raja

Are these three banana varieties all distinct enough that it's worth having all three?  Thank you.
