My Indonesian friend said it's called horned plantain. It looks like there are a couple types with a name like that though. What are some characteristics of this one?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana winterizing
« on: October 17, 2024, 10:17:05 AM »
This is my first year trying to protect bananas to get fruit next year. My plan is to chop the stalks to a reasonable size, wrap in c9 lights, then wrap in frost cloth. Will chopping the stem prevent fruiting?

Does it only bloom on old growth? Mine die to the ground every year since it's the last plant I protect. I'm thinking I need to step up if I want fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting mangoes deep
« on: April 01, 2024, 04:03:02 AM »
When I plant my citrus I plant it deep. It produces roots from the trunk and if I'm running behind covering there's less chance of them dieing to the graft. Can I do the same for mangoes? I have heard that they are hard to root, but since it can be done can they do well planted deep?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya ripening
« on: April 24, 2023, 11:30:55 PM »
A friend and I found red atemoya. I've never eaten it and it was slightly soft, but based on taste and what I know about cherimoya (the only one I have experience with) it wasn't quite ready yet. Is there any way to ripen after cutting?

When breeding citrus what affects the offspring you get? Does it nature a difference which is the mother or father plant? Like if you cross a kumquat with a mandarin would it take more characteristics from the mother or father?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best native type persimmon
« on: March 27, 2023, 02:49:30 AM »
Based on reading so far I think what I'm looking for is a variety from the Jerry Lehman collection. I tried a native persimmon at a rest stop on the Florida pan handle and found it far superior compared to the few Asian types I've tried. The downsides were small fruit and lots of seed taking up most of the room. That said are there any improved native varieties that are bigger and/or less seedy? Or perhaps a hybrid that takes after the native in taste and the Asian in size and seed amounts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Amla root system?
« on: March 08, 2023, 09:04:06 AM »
What type of root system does amla have? I have Indian and Chinese and need to relocate them. I also found out there is a sewer line very close to the surface and I have 3 citrus planted near it, so they need to be moved and I need to plan for different plants over there. Suggestions are welcome.

Does anyone have leads on this one? Or experience growing it? Based on reading it sounds worth trying in Houston.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best tools to test soil
« on: February 11, 2023, 10:43:35 AM »
I'm especially looking for a way to measure pH, but I'd be happy to get a few more tools for testing soil if they are worth having. I have a large need I'm going to plant with blueberries and I'll need to keep an eye on the pH, that's how I got started looking at ways to test soil.

Citrus General Discussion / I need help determining a mandarin variety
« on: January 01, 2023, 05:06:09 AM »
A friend in Lafayette has the best Satsuma mandarins I have ever had. The trees are quite large. He bought them from Home Depot at least a couple of decades ago. They are very sweet and the fruit is ready in January. The skin completely separates from the fruit when ripe. It is definitely able to survive freezes.

Anyone have any idea what variety this could be? Or another worth trying? There are so many varieties at my local nurseries I don't even know where to begin to try to get the same one.
