Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Shade cloth for fruit trees, mainly guavas

Thank you for the replies.
I am being lazy and was hoping someone would tell me to leave them.
It was a pain getting them up.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shade cloth for fruit trees, mainly guavas
« on: September 06, 2024, 12:40:31 AM »
I am in So. Cal. I put up some shade cloth (30%) for this hot weather. Seems to help a lot in filtering the hot sun. Questions: When the heat wave passes, should I leave it up? If I leave it up, would it prevent the fruit from maturing? Would it help any? Thanks for your input.

Tom

I have 4 55gal drums. Plastic. Used for collecting rain water. Good shape, complete with lids. I am getting new ones. I’d like to give away for free. Pick up in Hacienda Heights.

Getting bigger but no fruit yet, hopefully next year

Look up fig pop on YouTube. I’ve successfully rooted over 100 figs, dozens of citrus, dozens of jujubes but only two guava cuttings (out of 4). If you’d like to try that method, I have all the materials available. I can send you free of charge.

Greenpasteur has some really nice trees. Top notch. I was lucky enough to get a few. Wayyy nicer than anything compared to the nurseries.  He really knows his stuff too.

I am trying it right now in a variety of plants (w/ control groups), 2 weeks in - nothing noticeable.

I am in So Cal and winding clockwise. Am I doing it wrong?

I had a seedless guava tree with round, thick leaves. Good looking tree, large beautiful buds/flowers. Every single one dropped. Never gave me any fruit either. Had it for 3 years.

Not sure, only thing I know about these is what’s in the eBay description.

The plants made it. It took a week to ship and about a week to arrive from Indonesia. I'll report on what the fruit is like in a couple of years... haha.

I have a local vendor that sells pearl and diamond guavas. Diamond and crystal - pretty much the same. I grow both. To me, crystal/diamond guavas are sweeter with hardly any seeds.

I prefer crystal guava all the way. Maybe I haven't had a good example of pearl?

Copy, thanks for the replies. I will scale back on the high tech stuff. I even bought an electrical conductivity meter… heh

Reason I asked is because my guavas aren’t growing like they used to. First year = grew like champs, 2nd and 3rd yrs = dead or stunted. I figured I was overdoing it.

My atemoya tree on the other hand grew like a monster on this regimen. From twig to 100 flowers in one year!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please critique my watering method
« on: May 21, 2022, 10:39:40 PM »
Hello, I am pretty new to this fruit tree thing. Through research, this is what I do when watering my plants (mostly guava). Any feedback will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

1. Install in-line filter to remove chlorine/metals
2. Fill tub with filtered water
3. Add liquid fertilizer, foxfarm nutrients
4. Adjust PH to 6.5-7.0
5. Feed plants

Hello, does anyone know if these pink crystal guava from Indonesia are any good? I ordered four from eBay. They won’t be here for a couple of weeks.

Thanks
