Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: June Plum San Diego, CA?
« on: December 06, 2025, 11:54:11 PM »
When I was a kid back around 1970 I grew up on Cape May and Ebers St in Ocean Beach. There was an old growth, red plum tree in the yard that consistently put out large red flesh plums that would melt in my mouth. It wasn’t irrigated and along with the crab apples, apricots, and peach tree those were some of the best summer memories of my early life. Your mileage may vary!

Thanks for the explanations. I’m going to remove the two weak trunks and let the strong one grow out. I should have done it earlier so it wasn’t using so many resources on the weaker ones.

Can you help me understand then why is a poly seedling desirable? Maybe I’m confusing too many new topics for my smooth brain?

My poly seedling has three trunks. One strong, two not so much. So get rid of the problematic, less vigorous trunks?

My in ground 30” ST has three trunks. The main trunk growth looks awesome. Green and strong. The other two short trunks have some issue with dry spots turning black and, ultimately, dropping leaves. The small white spots are dried seaweed extract and micros from my sprayer. Will this issue, if not corrected, spread to the strong trunk? Should I remove the two low vigor to save the strong one?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! PG and Ocamponis.

I was able to source a bunch of seeds from him a couple of months ago. I hope that helped and he comes back stronger than ever.

Nice, c'mon spring!

Reviving an old thread. I recently bought a 10 inch red burgundy ilama whip. It’s in a very small planter. It’s been sitting on my patio table and bright indirect sun for a couple of months and is starting to put out leaves at two nodes. One of the sets of leaves appears to be turning gray. My overnight temperatures are getting down to 50° and expected to go down to the mid 40s next week. Should I take this inside and set it in a window?

The Internet has good information, but this thread seems to apply to Southern California and any help is appreciated. Thank you.

You've put a lot of qualifications in your post so that might explain the lack of responses. I'm not in SoCal for example so I don't know the local climate. I'm not sure if you have a good long and hot season being that close to the coast. Do you have the fig wasp?

The larger figs are usually not the tastiest. One that might be an exception if Ondata.

Otherwise, tastier figs include Smith, Black Madeira or Preto types, Del Sen Juame Gran, Nuestra Senora del Carmen, Bourjasotte Gris, etc.

The marine layer typically stops before it gets to my house so the June Gloom isn't much of a factor. This past summer climate change! made it a fairly cool summer with us only turning on the A/C for a few days instead of a few weeks. Typically, we get into the 90s for 2-3+ weeks and lows up into the mid-70s. I've not seen any wasps but it doesn't mean they aren't close by.

There’s just something about taking a bite of a warm, soft fig on a hot summer day!

Bought a pound of mixed jujubes from a member recently. Loved them so much I decided to buy a 4’ tall seedling that is already dormant, no leaves. I saved some large and small seeds from the fruits I bought. Here’s my question.

Should I germinate an unknown seed and grow them together for better pollination or is this Li going to give me a decent amount of fruit next year? Reading on the interwebs gives so many different answers.

My in ground VdeB has been a good producer for the past few years. I keep it trimmed to four feet each spring but will probably let it grow out more this spring. It has two main trunks, one VdeB only and the other grafted this past spring with Col de Dame, Tiger Panache, Texas Blue Giant, Super Jumbo DK, Yellow Long Neck and Constantine de Algeria. Only the Panache produced a single fig this summer, but high expectations for 2026!

I’m looking for a couple more LARGE fruit varieties to graft in the spring and would love some recommendations from those who are growing them successfully within five miles of the coast. Please list your favorites and a brief description and if you will sell a couple scions in Feb/Mar.

Thank you!

Picked a dozen PGs this morning and I think these have another week to go. Same number of green ones on the back side.

And then Ocamponis de Oaxaca will slowly ripen until spring if last year is any indication.
