Update: Unsurprisingly, both grafts dropped new growth, but appear to be alive. Claim retracted, these have not yet "taken."

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best sapodilla varieties

SW is nice, I enjoy it and like the small size. Rivas is the best sap I've tried. If you are into freeze drying, hard to find something better than freeze dried sapodilla.
Where did you try Rivas? I’ve never heard of that variety before. Love freeze dried fruit. I still have kilos of delicious freeze dried durian if you’re interested in trying some. At least one of the passionfruit vines you gave me has gone crazy climbing everywhere so I feel I owe you at least that. We went a little overboard bringing stuff home from Thailand 😂

Yes, we have to meet up soon! I will text you, feel free to reach out. Do you recall which passion vine I gave you?

Dr. Campbell hooked me up with Rivas fruits during mango season. I've been trying to get a plant or budwood since.

Myrciaria Carelessness (Blue Guac)

Hah!  M. carelessness  ;D. I was careless with my M. carelessness and overwatered them. Now they are all dead.

LOL! Spell correct drives me crazy, but kinda like the sound of m carelessness now.

Mine struggled with overwatering too; went from drought, to excessive rain, back to dry now.

Those are beauties Luis! Labisia is amazing when small. I really like the look of m. pastora as well.

Wish I knew how to add the giant pictures that Luisport posts. Easier than clicking through to postimg, especially on mobile.
I sure hope M. pastora is a winner as far as fruit.  It grew like a weed through the worst parts of summer here in SoCA.
My friend i don't know how i do it... i try to post smaller version but i don't know why... what i do is to clic on image icon and then go to the image i want to post and copy the image link and insert between

lmao, was wondering the same thing. Just recently, was unable to post pics for a little while. Realized the image size was too big, but I had changed nothing. Maybe the phone update had something to do with it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yangmei (Morella/Myrica rubra) thread
« on: November 11, 2025, 04:51:50 PM »
All of my trees on m. rubra are now dead or dying. Some of them lasted a few years. The slightest of stress sends them into a death spiral. The latest casualty occurred after taking budwood. Tree looked happy and established, now brown dry dead leaves adorn the branches. I am of the strong opinion that these must be grafted onto something other than rubra, if grown in FL, maybe anywhere out of their native habitat.

They are both great mangoes. Pickering has more broad appeal and disease resistance, so perhaps a better pic all around. DH is really good tho; I say grow both.

So fresh and so clean! Love it, will be nice to see everything fill in. Keep us posted!

Potassium sulfate seems to be good, at least here in SoFL, prior to blooming, and also after fruit have set. Micros are something else to consider.

Hello everyone, here is a little update:

Lots of our trees are like this Silas Wood sap, hard to distinguish from the background foliage...

Indian/Thai Jujube

Piper nigrum

Wow! I wasn't sure at first if that is really mango, but appears to be so. You may have some special genetics there, or radioactive soil, lol! Send me some budwood when she grows up please =)

Your method would work if PM wasn't so prolific, and if other mango trees were not around. Pretty sure it rides the wind around all of our neighborhoods. My guess is a consistent and rotating spray routine starting just before flowering, or once flowering has begun, is ideal and most cost effective.

Yindu 3 seedlings, sowed in March of this year. Easy to break up at this size, with little losses. I  will keep the most vigorous and interesting of the bunch.

Builders sand, course sand, seems to be better for plants than fine sand. Gonna check with the local tile and gravel/rock shop to see if they have some options.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passion Fruit -Taste Comparision/Tasting
« on: October 25, 2025, 10:34:15 AM »
Picked up a Taiwanese purple plant from a very nice lady in CA, who also sent 4 fruit. Very good, taste was strong and balanced. Growing some seeds out now as well.

Growing some seedlings of the Qinmi9 x Big Dennis cross.

Getting about time to replace some passion vines, losing some here and there to old age. Just lost a giant p. laurifolia, was in ground roughly 9 years. There has been a max exodus of iguanas from the tree that hosted the vine, as they love the flowers. The next round of varieties should be even better.

19
Consider adding just 1 plant, and going for a 25+ gallon container. 45g would be better. 15g is going to get small quick with both mango and cado.

I throw a bunch of seeds into 3 gal pots (1/4 - 1/3 filled) or smaller, and when they get 6 inches plus, they are easy to separate without killing them.

I wouldn't say "green apple" taste, but it looks like a little green apple. The flavor is not sour. It is mildly sweet, refreshing, and cooling. Tastes more like a mild apple. The skin is more easily chewed and consumed, Granny Smith has some tough skin. Great texture.

Yes, it is a decent apple alternative for SoFL. Our main tree is covered in flowers right now, and swarms of bees and flies have been working it.

I'm growing a variety from PIN. It usually produces well, although it did take 1 year off (perhaps due to drought). The fruit are good if picked at the perfect time, but otherwise can be insipid. They are crunchy and very refreshing. Have not noticed any off flavors or tannin issues. Fruit size varies from large grape size up to a nice goose egg. Very happy with my tree and this fruit. Another tree, from Top Trops was planted in mostly shade, and has not produced in a couple of years. The fruit tastes the same, from what I can tell.

I've tried Chinese jujubes, and so far prefer z. mauritiana.

Camplus on Etsy sold me a nice size seedling (2 feet+) a couple of years ago. It is now about 11 feet and has flowered already.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passiflora for sleep
« on: October 17, 2025, 05:03:55 PM »
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) and sleep hygiene are way better for most sleep problems than ANY medication or herbal remedy. No meds or herbals for sleep work well long term, but some may be useful if used for brief periods. They all have problems, risks, and side effects, and stop working after a while. People just become dependent and believe they sleep better than they would without whatever they are taking. When they stop, sleep either improves or stays the same. Sleep Doc may wanna chime in here too.

Passion fruit is great for eating, and has a variety of health benefits. Wouldn't recommend it for sleep.
