Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What are the best Durian varieties you can grow in So.Cal?
« on: May 06, 2024, 06:02:50 PM »I got D. macrantha seeds from Mike T many years ago. Have 3 trees growing. One looks close to flowering. I forwarded some of those seeds from same batch to Micah here in Hawaii, and one of his trees has flowered this year, but not set fruit yet.The question of the most cold tolerant durians has been asked many times and the probability of success in Florida and So Cal. Soils are also a factor in Florida. Durio macrantha and D. kinabaluensis are the best contenders in the genus it would seem due to the altitudes they come from and with the former known performance. For zibethinus itself the 2 Laplaes which are perhaps the world most desirable varieties but not completely seedless. Red Prawn D 175 is also a genuine hope. It appears to suffer less below say 7c than dozens of other varieties pushed towards their limits. Pomoho monthong which is not a genuine monthong has shown a bit of fortitude also.
You've just reminded me about my search for D. macrantha seeds from about a decade ago. I wonder if anyone in the US was ever able to get seeds.
