Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB Avocado scions.
« on: January 17, 2025, 01:59:35 PM »
I have Fuerte and many others

2
Buds on scions are still looking good not too advanced yet and I still have great selection of thickness of scions wanted , I also have others to sell cheaper than Cannonball like ,bacon gem sir prise duke ,MG,Reed, Hass zutano, big black johnson

3
Cannonball has very large leaves along with the big fruit here's a picture of a 9 inch leaf but they can get a lot bigger than that depending on growing conditions

4
I did plant some Hass and Maluma trees at the same time and with new trees in the ground the Maluma pushed new leaf growth slightly better but it could be more related to type of rootstock used on diff trees over variety.

5
Ya I don't know if taste is any better than Hass it appears that it can have a hint of strings at times but fruit runs larger than Hass and Maluma seed is smaller, the tree itself is said to take heat better and production of tree itself is heavier than Hass trees, the  Maluma tree is smaller than Hass so better prospect for trellis growing or tight close tree plantings, my biggest mystery still is how well it takes the cold my trees need to see a winter or 2 before I have a better idea.

6
Theres a couple of vids on YouTube of Maluma , in one video it compares a taste test on Maluma and Reed off his own trees and he said he liked the Maluma over a Reed in taste, I thought that was interesting.

7
I read other post no one commented having a older fruiting tree but one had a young fruiting tree, , still too new in California slow to catch on it appears, I'm convinced it will get more popular once more see how good it is. Brokaw has none for a few years out.

8
Thank you Soo much John51 I was not aware I will read comments on that post, I have Maluma but trees are small and wanted to hear about older trees that fruit and  if anyone growing in colder areas, some say it takes cold better than Hass others say worse so I don't know yet which is more accurate.

Thanks so much for adding more detail it's sounds very promising and worth growing, what city is this grown in Florida, I would like to see if it can do well in Cal if it can handle under 32 and over 105 on high temps.

First time I've heard the name , I'm interested in hearing more what the tree is like and fruit , if it has potential to be grown in Cal ,etc.

12
I'm curious any growers that are growing the Maluma avocado that originates in South Africa what they think about so far , how the tree handles the cold or heat, what they think of fruit taste and quality, the size of tree, how fast it grows ,if alternate bearing ?

I have Aravapia, Duke, Stewart, Mexicola, Mex Grande, Big Black Johnson scions to sell you can pm me let me know

14
The fruit size of poms I'm looking for is 3 to 4 pound range, but also could be interested in rare uncommon types with exceptional flavor.

15
Too Scott , yes some areas on or close to coast prob fine for grafting outdoors this time of year , the buds on cannonball look good right now that's why I'm offering scions at this time of year and I will prob sell scions all the way till March or April then stop till late fall.i also have a nice variety of size less than a pencil on small side all the way up to 3/8th thickness.i grafted on a branch on central coast of cali late Nov 2023 the graft did fine.

16

So this picture shows the ridging or like bumps it's not slightly stretched like Reed or MP can look

17
I would plant way more cannonball trees if it wasn't for my cold winters, they need protection at least for several nights a year until they get 8 to 10 feet tall or so the first few years are much more work, idealy it does best closer to ocean like bay area or parts of southern Cal that  never or rarely hit 29-30 degree or so, that to me is the biggest negative but still very much worth growing. The nice thing also is grafts almost always take if the grafter is somewhat skilled and grafted at best time of year, my scions are high quality right now( nice bud size) but for many in dec that means grafting in a greenhouse or house or the graft will go dormant or might even fail

18
Yes Im wanting to add ambrosia you can PM  me with a price , I don't have large types to trade I only have small to mediums more common types.

19
Looking to add very large Pomegranate  fruit type looking for great tasting at the same time, is anyone growing the bigger types or a nursery they recommend in the San Joaquin valley in Cal with a great selection ? I've heard of the name ambrosia but not sure if that's the biggest or best tasting.

20
Sounds like cannonball spreads better than Marcus, so its much easier to pick and cannon taste much better, only thing Marcus might be better at is taking the cold but can't say 100 percent, but I've proven in my own orchard it's better than Nabal , cannon prob neck in neck with Reed for taking cold, but fruit Soo much bigger than Reed , much more flesh so commands better fruit price, it also  sounds like shelf life is  better than a Marcus after being picked, I've never heard of a cannonball fruit look perfect on outside and rotten in inside.

21
Another reason Cannonball superior to Nabal is not just because it's larger and more flesh to eat and more cold hardy,  but also cause the mother tree seems much less of an alternate bearer than Nabal.

22
Kaz I didn't realize Marcus pumpkin was that old but  it still seems unlikely that cannonball sprang from a Marcus seed as its grown much more is Florida than calif, so likey from a Nimlioh , Nabal, Reed to me seems much more likely of the seed used since they are grown in Cal much more often here, a taste test of Marcus is on YouTube she described it a little watery and a little sweet. I have no clue if Marcus taste better if grown in Cal, in about a year it will be known how good the fruit taste from  cannonball grown in summer temps over 105, but the fruit is fabulous in a more mild climate.

23
Kaz if you get a video taste test on YouTube let me know, and ideal taste test would be a blind taste test , using Nabal,Reed, Marcus, cannonball, and nimlioh in the test but super hard to gather all thoughs at the same time

24
Plus doesn't Marcus  originate in Florida ?, Cannonball originates in northern Cal.

25
As far as I know Marcus pumpkin did not even exit when the cannonball seed was planted estimating 20 to 35 years ago, Marcus seems not as round to me and as far as taste I hear Marcus has a sweet watery taste though still good , cannonball closer to like a Nabal taste , prob just as good as a Reed if not better than a reed
