Honey crisp kumquat
« on: February 20, 2024, 03:32:48 PM »
Hello to all forum members, I'm in search of Honey crisp kumquat (preferably seeds) because of dealing with customs etc. I know this kumquat is seedless, but I have also seen that people do find seeds in fruit (not much but none the less). Any forum member here from China or someone who can help me regarding this topic? Thanks in advance. I live in EU btw

What is honey crisp kumquat?
Is it a knock off of crispy honey kumquat?

I don't speak any chines languages but is it possible that "honey" and "crispy" are both describing the kumquat so the word order doesn't matter? Maybe both are variant translations of the same name?

Both of these search terms gets you the same results, don't blame me, blame the people who call it different names

Hello friend, I come from China. This variety is the third generation of the Crispy honey kumquat from Guangxi Province, China. Its advantage is that the fruit is relatively large, high sweetness and no sour taste. The seeds of this variety are very small or almost seedless, and here they are propagated by grafting.

quite pricey and in China, but maybe it's of interest to someone

How do you know it is in China? That site used to claim they were located in Virginia or something. Has anyone bought and received what they payed for from that site? It seems suspect to me.

I try to guess. Might it be a triploid hybrid of Fukushu and Meiwa?

I read it is  tetraploid, and the skin is diploid. The size of the fruit is as large as an egg (60 grams).

Don’t know about the site’s legitimacy, but the fruit shown on the pictures and the description, that’s it, that’s the one, that’s the fruit.

Hey ChangYun Nursery, is it possible to send scions (cuttings) or a mature tree (or seeds if you find any) to Europe. I am looking for this kumquat variety for ages with zero success yet. Thanks

I tried ordering from this website, and the seller wont send to EU, I suspect he doesnt deal with customs declarations. But I saw some people ordered from this website somewhere on reddit and order came (I think order was from US).

It is a natural budding variety of crispy kumquat. It has no shortcomings except that it is difficult to manage.

I would love to try it. So many varieties available in the world but not here. I wonder why the citrus budwood place doesn't have it? Is it a relatively new  variety?

Maybe I'll be lucky enough to find one in a few years... but $200 for what appears to be an internationally shipped plant, no thanks.

The company is not in Virginia, best I could find. If they were I'd try to go for a visit.

Edit... I reached out to a few folks, including an etsy seller and was informed of the following... hopefully ChangYun Nursery can confirm this to be correct?

"Hello! While both the Crispy Kumquat (脆皮金桔) and the Crispy Honey Kumquat (脆蜜金桔) come from Guangxi, they are actually two different varieties."

"Crispy Kumquat

Appearance: Round or oval in shape, with smooth skin that is thin and crispy, and tender flesh. The crisp skin is the reason it's called "Crispy Kumquat."
Taste: The skin is crisp, and the flesh is tender with no bitterness or sourness, offering a pure sweetness. It has almost no seeds or is seedless, with a sweetness level of 20+.

Crispy Honey Kumquat (also known as Crispy Honey Kumquat King)

Appearance: Shaped like a pomelo or a small light bulb, with smooth skin that is thin and soft.
Taste: The skin is soft, with a high juice content. The flesh is fragrant and sweet, almost seedless, and has an incredibly high sweetness level of 23+."

I would buy but I am afraid it is pig slaughtering operation. There have been a few foreign sellers here. I would be willing to bet more than a few are selling low quality plants. I don't don't want to buy sight unseen.

For what it's worth, I did find an etsy seller who occasionally stocks these trees in the US of A. They are listed as "crispy sweet kumquat".

Unfortunately, they are currently out of stock, but I will update when they are available for the interested parties.
