« on: July 29, 2024, 04:35:56 PM »
Anyone in Hawaii picking plants of Honey cream from Frankie’s up and wants to do a fellow grower a solid?  Interested in a couple but I’m here and they are there :(

I'm a sucker for a great name - that sounds delicious! What is the actual flavor like?

It has basically no sour taste.  Far sweeter than the ones you would get from the store.  I'm not well versed with pineapples like some people here are but it is a top notch pineapple in my opinion.  If anyone can secure a plant and get it cleared by USDA, please PM.

It's super sweet, no acidity. Reminds me of the flavor of a cream soda dum-dum. Really great pineapple! I'm glad they are making them available.

I would like to jump on too. I have been dying to get my hands on this variety. I would be happy to compensate for time.

That’s not going to happen. Frank does not sell plants of this. Last I heard he was in the process of patenting this variety.

At this time only Oahu sales.  No shipping is an option.

Oh boy, it's almost like this Frankie guy knows the best way to make me want a pineapple - to tell me I can't have it!

Even if the plant is shipped without soil media? Just asking because I know both Hawaii and California have a lot of agricultural restrictions so it can be a bit hairy navigating the legally right way to do things.  I have never had issues receiving plants from Hawaii to here (at least the ones you have sent me :) ).  Maybe one day someone can send slips to us on the mainland?

Yes it is. It was a typo. One of many mistakes that happen in life.

Not sure about soilless plants, but I was allowed to bring fruit & tops through the airport, with inspection, so I would expect it to be similar, or worst case cut off the roots. I brought home a carry-on full of the Kauai sugarloafs (fruits) a couple years ago, plus the tops I had twisted off the ones we'd eaten over there, and the airport Ag inspector totally understood why someone would do that :P  Only took him a couple minutes to go over them.

In 8 years when the patent runs its course.

Plus coconuts and durians are the only fruits I can think of you can take out of the state with inspection.  Otherwise only plants and seeds with inspection.  No fruits

The patent only means that we can't produce it for profit and no company can steal it and call it their variety. It doesn't make it illegal for a friend to send another friend a cutting. If any of you friends would be willing to toss a slip (or better, a pineapple) in the mail I would pay whatever you needed for shipping.

I asked the APHIS guys at the Honolulu airport if I would've been allowed to bring fruit or seeds in carry-on if they inspected them. They gave me a weird answer about there's only two fruits you can take, pineapple and something else. But then I asked, so I can bring pineapples on the plane? And they said no. At least that's how I remember it. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I think there may be some special rule for pineapples.

Pineapples on a plane could be a deadly weapon. Like water bottles and toe nail clippers.

I’ve seen them selling Maui gold pineapples near the airport terminal before. Either on Maui or in HNL.  They came in a box of 2 I think. Maybe they were pre inspected and probably had to stay in the case. Pretty sure people were bringing them on as a carry on

I've been growing this seedling of Meli Kalima for about 4.5 years and I've finally got a fruit. I'm hoping it's close to the parent, but it might be the next best thing for us on the mainland.
