Orri Mandarin - Wow, Dang Wow!
« on: October 14, 2024, 01:30:00 PM »
I'm not one who would wow over anything that I could readily get at the grocery store...my pop brought over a couple of these mandarins, labeled Orri, the other day...citrus, I eat 'em but I wouldn't normally go gaga over them, but even as I was peeling this one, it felt different (very thin skin; almost like ripping paper). When I popped that first segment in my mouth, I felt my pupils dilating, it was the sweetest, best tasting citrus I have ever eaten bar none!

Of course, like a good TFF member, I scouted the internet and sourced myself a grafted plant. Though I have no more than a 12'x15' grow space, this one is a must IMO!

I paid $89. Sorry for the earlier link, didn't realize the seller had two different offerings. I must have gotten the smaller size:

I'll post some pictures of the tree I received tomorrow.

I got a bag of this from the super market, this one is very good, but still far away from the best that I’ve tasted.

Taste varies a lot. With regard to the taster and the fruit.  ;)

Love that you found a new favorite though! I hope it turns out to be everything you wanted.

My experience with citrus is limited, but from what I have tasted, this one really woke my tastebuds. I never thought I would give space to something as common as a mandarin.

Thanks for sharing i just ordered from them as well.  They "guaranteed" me that this was in fact Orri mandarin and i have heard rave reviews from everyone who has tried it. I want to put it up against Bingo in a taste test.

Shiranui is still my current #1 but have heard many people say Bingo is new contender along with Orri. Lots of time money and research went into all of these varieties.

"Bingo" is (Clementine × Valensia) × Kishu. The patent.

Orri seems to be the product of an induced mutation in the Orah mandarin, very popular in China and I believe it was improved in Israel. Gamma ray irradiation is a common technique to cause seed reduction. Genetic analysis mentions that the pollen parent may be the Kinnow mandarin, which in turn is a cross between King x Willow left mandarin. That's as far as I go. It seems that Orah is not apomictic, characteristic of King and his children (some are 60% zygotic). In another genetic study of mandarins, Orah, Wilking and King are placed on the same branch of the cladogram. This reflects that the sequence analyzed is the same. It may be that this character has been inherited or that it reflects that they are all daughters and granddaughters of King. Keep in mind that: King x Willow left mandarin gave several useful crosses today: Encore, Kinnow, Wilking, and I don't remember if there are any more.

So I went by the shop where my pop got those Orri mandarins. I was delighted to see that they were still available, but the sticker is different; the fruits are a lot bigger (comparable to a navel orange). I loaded up almost 10 pounds of those things. People saw me going crazy over them, a crowd soon formed. When I got home, I couldn't wait to dig my nails into one of those fruits. As I started peeling into one of them, I noticed the skin was much thicker. About the thickness of a navel orange. I was like, okay, that's fine, it's the taste and flavor that matter. Popped that first segment in my mouth and I was immediately (¬_¬) It was the blandest thing I have tasted. Maybe it was mislabeled, maybe there are different variations of the cultivar, but was nothing like the initial ones that I have tasted. What a disappointment. I hope the tree that I have purchased is of the better tasting variety.

Okay, so I went back to the listing on ebay. Luckily, the fruits pictured look more inline with the good tasting variety - smaller fruit; smoother skin, not bumpy like the bland ones.

Although you clearly got something different that last time, the time of year can also influence them quite a lot.

A year ago I bought them when they started to get stocked in the grocery store, and they were really good. I kept buying them, but the quality noticeably went down after a short while. Don't know if they store them some way, or pick them later (too late), or if they came from a different country/climate, but they weren't as good.

It was so drastically different - size, shape, flavor...it's almost like  another variety. I guess like with most fruits, you just have to get it at that pinnacle of ripeness.

Let's add Noble to the comparison lineup! They are my favorite, even over Gold Nugget, and I'm really liking forward to them coming into season.

I’ve wanted a Noble tree and their patented Starburst pomelo for years but they are Fort Knox on releasing anything.  I’ve never tried Orri but a good Gold Nugget is hard to
Beat.

I ate both Orri and have the Gold Nugett tree that gets many fruits. I like Gold Nugget better. Orri is still very good, but to me not any better than most good tasting mandarins and I have most of them fruiting. On a good day, either Gold Nugget or Yosemite Gold is hard to beat, Orri is not as good.

For you guys in the South, when does Gold Nugget ripen for you? UCR lists it as very late for a mandarin, even into June of the following year.

Here in San Diego my gold nugget is ready starting January and we usually have picked all by March, but I’ve let a few last until May and they are still good.

Gold nugget is a tree I’ve planted another one of because they are so dang good and people ask for them.

My local farmer's market, a great place that always has all kinds of exotic fruits, had a billboard up advertising the Orri mandarin. I bought a few of them with very high expectations, but they tasted very similar to other mandarins I've had, maybe even a bit more bland. A little fibrous, a little sweet, a little tart, not much flavor. The fruit looked like the first photo shown in this thread.
