Beetles eating my Black Sapote
« on: October 23, 2024, 08:15:23 PM »
There have been beetles ravaging my Black Sapote for quite some time. Is there a way to eliminate them ?  My tree is in North Miami area and probably 20 years  old. Thank you

I would love to help, but I can't identify the bugs without some pictures. Please provide some  :)

Any chance they are small whitish colored beetles? If so those are  Sri Lankan weevils. https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/sri_lankan_weevil.htm  If you have those good luck if you also have oak trees and such. I gave up because they were all over the oak trees too.
Only good thing about Milton is it took most of the leaves so I hope the things starve to death and maybe it reduces their population. Plus it flooded the grounds so maybe it drowned the grubs.

Edit, mostly gave up since they can fly and would come in from neighboring properties. Thought about trying BT to control their grubs and still might since the grubs supposedly are just as damaging to the plant roots. But the adults I gave up on. Orchids I can control them on with systemic sprays but you do not want to use those on edibles.

Do they happen to be small black flea beetles? I have so many of those on my Black Sapotes. They got over and infested my Fig too, but I got on top of that with the last resort of using imidacloprid; something I only used after trying all organic controls I could find.

Its not an immediate solution but you could try adding beneficial nematodes to the soil around the trees that will attack the grubs and help control the population.  Not sure what the range on adult beetles is but stopping them from maturing near the tree could help.
