Wtb uncaria tomentosa (cats claw)
« on: November 06, 2024, 10:22:38 AM »
Magical medicinal plant that I want to be growing, but it's proving very hard to find. Does anyone here have access to seeds? I would love to buy some.

It roots from cutting easily. I know I have one in the yard, but need to see if it is big enough to clip from.

Cutting works too. I just want a reliable source where I'm definitely getting the right thing because I plan to do it medicinally. Not many places sell the plant or seeds online, though tons sell bark for herbal use

Any luck in your yard?

Hey Rispa, This grows naturally around our land down South. I'll watch for it. D

Are you kidding me? We have it growing wild here in Texas? That's fantastic! Thanks for keeping an eye out and for the info!

Are you sure you're not confusing it with https://www.npsot.org/posts/invasive-plant/dolichandra-unguis-cati/?

I don't think it would survive winters in Texas; it's native to the Amazon rainforest.

I believe the land =Pokeweed has is south of Houston and doesn't get hit by the same cold weather as Houston, so I think it's a possibility. We'll just have to wait and see.

Now that I look at what you're talking about, I don't have that. I have a fruit which was sold to me as "cat's claw" and has sharp spines along a vine, and grows an orange fruit with small thorns coming out of it that rub off. It is tasty, but I have neglected the vine a lot and haven't looked for it in awhile.

Here it is, in all it’s neglected glory. Upon more reading, it is Pereskia aculeata.

Hey Rispa, I haven't had a chance to look for the plants, but etsy jas a listing. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1417477838/devils-claw-cats-claw-seeds?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_-home_and_living-domestic_low&utm_custom1=_k_be0e2a23c3bf19663a534d18f45c8e28_k_&utm_content=bing_412373112_1309518646655325_81844979140035_pla-4585444530274366:aud-805670572:pla-4585444530274366_t__1417477838&utm_custom2=412373112&msclkid=be0e2a23c3bf19663a534d18f45c8e28
Hope this helps. D

FWIW I tried these and they weren't viable. There are some people that regularly list plants on Ebay such as https://www.ebay.com/itm/266317320858, but the IDs don't look quite right to me - they're always missing the trademark hooks.
Hopefully in the spring there will be more listings including ones that look more promising. I'm patient. I'll find it eventually

If you're okay with seeds GardenShaman sells them and is generally pretty reliable:

https://www.gardenshaman.eu/en/produkt/katzenkralle-uncaria-tomentosa-samen/

https://www.gardenshaman.eu/en/produkt/katzenkralle-uncaria-guianensis-samen/

I'll have to place an order with them across the pond eventually if I can find any local sources.

Lol as soon as you described the fruit I knew which "cat's claw" you were talking about. Did you purchase yours from
"The Plant Guy" in City Terrace? He was on all the sites selling p.aculeata as cat's claw. I actually think p.aculeata is
more useful than u.tormentosa, due to it's edible leaves and fruit, but I guess it depends on what you want to use it for

Yup, bought many plants from that guy. Sometimes I wonder how he's doing. That was one wild set-up.

Yes it was! I bought a dragon fruit plant from him about 8 years ago. Still have it.

Just looked him up. His name was Ernie Alderete and apparently he passed away in February of this year at 71 years old :(

Uncaria bark is an excellent immune booster that I've used in humans, birds, and dogs with great results. I'm talking to a lady about getting parvo puppies on purpose in future and giving it to them to see if they have a better survival rate. Based on a sample set of one it helps.

The aculeata looks worth growing too. What's your experience with using and the taste of the different parts of the plant?

The leaves are crisp and have a very mild spinach taste. They're almost tasteless tbh, which is a good thing. They're great in a salad and good source of protein. The fruits are like a washed out loquat. Very juicy with a mild sour/sweet taste and 3-5 small black seeds. The flowers are really beautiful and bring tons of bees. I couldn't recommend a better plant if you're looking to attract pollinators. I have an old video with my plant buzzing with 100's of bees

Okay, you sold me. That would fit in very well with my garden too. You have a cutting or seeds to spare? 😉
