Gooseberry is an annual outside of it's native tropical environment. Most people's plants are dying off right now unless they're protected. It's like a tomato in that you can go seed to fruit in about 5-6 months, so you're probably better off buying seeds. I grew some Cossack Pineapple Gooseberry a few years back that were really tasty. Aunt Molly's is supposed to be a good tasting variety

I had grown them years ago in hot Mediterranean climate. But they had just disappeared after a while although it was not that cold in winter. Do they also die in California during winters? Do they act like perennial plants if kept warm in winter ? Thanks.

I grew 3 different varieties and none of them survived my winter. I get mid to low 40's with the occasional high 30's. They either had mildew and or spot diseases. My plants were inground and unprotected. I assume they'll survive if you keep them warm over the winter

Mine dies back a bit in winter then regrows. I let mint, pepino, and passion fruit took over and covered it. Need to check to see if it is still there. The fruit is good, tropical and complex.

Technically perennials.... In my area I treat them as annuals... I start them in late Winter like tomatoes and peppers.

Thanks Kevin. Do you start them with seeds or cuttings? Do you have the cultivar with big fruits?

Typically seeds... though now they volunteer occasionally.
Sorry I can't recommend a variety with large fruit.

Looks like my gooseberry is still alive. Not sure what you mean by big fruits. Found some old pictures of my gooseberry, yellow is when it is ripe, greenish still taste good.
