source for DaisySL?
« on: August 04, 2023, 10:04:27 PM »
Looking for DaisySL, Yosemite Gold, and Lee x Nova and can't find the DaisySL anywhere. FourWinds has Yosemite and LeexNova but does anyone know where to find DaisySL? I've called FourWinds, they don't have any in inventory.

Also, is there any way to buy clean cuttings instead of the whole tree from FourWinds? Not available through CCPP that I know of. I don't think 382   DAISY MANDARIN is the same.

TreeSource carry DaisySL (the code is "DSL" in their system), but I haven't seen it in any of the recent liner availability lists I've had from them. They do sell budwood, but I don't know if a license is required for DaisySL as with some other relative new releases.

And yes, DaisySL is an irradiated bud sport of Daisy, so you want VI 763, which is in CCPP's variety list, but not listed among the available varieties. Again, there may be a licensing issue here, I'm not sure.

Thanks! I had forgotten about treesource. I'll call Monday and see what they have. The Super Citrus sounds great. Does anyone know if Burchell/Tomorrows Harvest resells TreeSource because I think the rootstock tags look the same. I think I've gotten a few of those from my local nursery.

Yosemite Gold

Just FYI, that one is newly off patent this year (TDE4), so you might be able to find a nursery willing to sell budwood of that at least. Here's the patent, expired in January:

Since you're in the quarantine zone you can use the CCPP, but as mentioned, not all varieties are available. The local CRFG group may have plans to do a group order if there is interest. It's especially helpful if multiple people are looking for the same variety as each scion usually comes with plenty of buds to share.

I ordered DaisySL budwood from Arizona's budwood program. I don't know if they ship out of state like California does, but it couldn't hurt to ask. It was very affordable. The website is not super useful, but you can check it out here:

Dr. Glenn Wright has handled questions and ordering for me in the past. You can reach him at gwright@ag.arizona.edu

I ordered Daisy SL from CCPP and grafted it on Seville Sour and later on C22.  The C22 tree is healthier, more productive and taste better than the SSO tree.  Daisy SL taste excellent.  It's big, juicy and sweet with some tang.  I would say it's a strong classic mandarin flavor.  The tree is vigorous so is suitable for AZ unlike satsumas.  Some drawbacks are ugly twisted leaves, slightly less easy to peel than some other mandarins and have fruit split issues.  The fruit split issue is worse when the tree is young and the Phoenix desert conditions don't help.  Despite all the split fruit, production is still decent.  I think it is under patent so can't propagate it anymore.

I have Chislett navel orange(excellet sweet tasting last season navel), which is now also under some kind of license.  Does anyone know how navels like Everhard and Gillenberg compare to Washington?

I saw your post about Chislett and am interested in that. Wish ccpp had it. I know they used to have Daisy SL which I also wanted.  They will have upcoming budwood available of US942 which should be a great rootstock.

Wondering what other varieties have been purchased out of our reach. Kinnow LS and Fairchild LS are a couple

I wish I had those two mandarins because they're supposed to do well in the desert.  There is also an Encore LS.  Pakistan even has their own version of seedless Kinnow.  I would get the Ortanique LS now if you don't want to miss out again.  They wouldn't bother creating an LS or SL version unless it's topnotch.

I've since tasted the Daisy SL. I wouldn't prefer it to the LeexNova. But I will keep trying them.

My Daisy SL taste better than the Lee&Nova so far.  They are next to each other both on C22 rootstock.
Daisy is harder to peel, but has firmer pulp than the L&N.  The birds prefer the Daisy too.

Well since Daisy SL is under license and ccpp won't sell it I thought I'd try some other mandarins. Snowjunky I took your advice and placed a ccpp order for
ORTANIQUE LS. Happy to see if is a late season mandarin. I wonder how it differs from Gold Nugget in timing.
Okitsu Wase satsuma - top rated taste test by fruitmentor article from 2014. I have Miho and Owari
YOSEMITE GOLD The only one of the gold series I don't have. My friend has it and the fruit is huge.

Also got some US-942 rootstock wood coming.
