Avocado leaf burn from worm bin?
« on: December 16, 2024, 06:56:05 PM »
I put a worm compost bin (Subpod) in a raised planter, to get compost. Then I googled that avocados were among the more fruit-fly resistant fruits out there among those we were interested in. So I planted a Fuerte avocado right next to the bin, in the same aluminum planter. I though the “free compost tea” would help any fruit tree.

New growth on the tree has a very small amount of leaf tip burn but the older leaves have more. Not enough the tree looks like it’s dying, but enough that it looks like it could tip towards unhealthy in the coming months/year as its roots take over the rest of the soil.

My other avocados are fine. So I’m wondering if it’s the worm bin. I don’t put meats, salty or acidic food in there. Mostly I just feed the worms leftover/old fruit, vegetables, and bread/pasta/rice.(plain—no sauce/peanut butter/etc). Is sharing a large planter (one of those large aluminum ones) with a worm bin enough to tip the salt balance towards the unhealthy for an avocado?

Make sure you are not overwatering and soil is not too acidic.

I'm more likely under-watering this tree.

I'll check the pH.

Most all avocado's right now in ground have burnt leaf tips it's from salt build up in soil. That's why avo farmers flush out salts with long watering periodically.
Also if we get heavy rains will do the same, try and flood pot well or wait for rain. Avocados will be loosing old leaves and putting on new soon.
