Shine Muscat - Blandest Grape Ever!
« on: January 27, 2025, 01:12:46 PM »
Had this grape before, it was alright in the first day I bought it; however, its flavor diminishes exponentially by the day. This second batch I bought tasted worst than the worst grape I have ever eaten.

I have had some really outstanding ones, and some really mediocre ones. I paid the ultra premium price for Korean imported ones, which were very good - and then started seeing them for really cheap, like standard grape prices, from online groceries like Say Weee! They were CA grown, and quite frankly awful. There were some winners in the Weee selections, but it wasn't Muscat.

Yeah, I think it's all about where they were grown. The ones I got from Korea tasted okay, but I didn't think it was worth the $16 that I'd paid. That last batch was $8. It was from Guatemala or something. It was the worst grape I have eaten.

I bought some from H-Mart last week and they were just ok.  I’m not sure how much better they could have tasted. The ones I bought were firm and seemed perfectly ripe.  Is their appeal just size and seedless, or is there something unique in their flavor that I completely missed?

There was a really unique flavor.
But this was in 2019 in Korea. Never had the same stuff from a store.
Now, with the huge demand for shine muscats,
regulations have been laxed I guess? So now farmers are just mass producing these fruits.
Even top notch imports from Korea don't taste anywhere the same.

As homegrowers, it is very easy to get the unique flavor...just fruit are smaller and have seeds.
Flavor gets washed out when you go for size and forget the grape growing practices.

Also I do believe they lose their flavor in transit.
A lot of them can store in the fridge at the store for a long time or sit at a wearhouse.
They definitely not a good image of the full potential

That's what I'm thinking. Is this all the fuss is about?!

I purchased some from Tokyo Central and it was big grapes, firm, sweet. One of the best tasting to me. Not as sweet as Cotton Candy but still very good since it has no seeds. It may have a longer storage life since it is firm and doesn't get soft quickly.

I guess you have to get them from the source.
