Current format works great for me on mobile.  I prefer browser over native apps

Citrus don't need humidity as far as I know, just sufficient irrigation.  I would go with the ventilation option in your scenario.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: ‘Tikal’ sapodilla cultivar
« on: February 04, 2025, 07:48:46 AM »
I have a Tikal also,in a ~3gal container that has its first fruit growing, grape size now.  It has been flowering for a year or more, I was worried about lack of cross-pollination but it is good to hear it is known as a productive variety.

I don't actually like sapodilla much, it is painfully sweet, but for some reason I couldn't resist growing them and hoping I learn to like the fruit more.

The skin on mine are sweet also, but there is so little of it compared to the flesh it isn't very noticeable

these Crispy Honey Kumquats are unlike any citrus I have ever tried.  The flesh texture is more like a pear, and is juicy and sweet despite looking like pomelo pith.  I recommend anybody who has the opportunity to try them!

I definitely like them, but I can't even compare them to other kumquats because they are so different.

I didn't like my pink wampee fruit and got rid if it.  I am growing a yellow one now.

Welcome!

Soursop is a tasty fruit, and the tree looks nice.  Weird smelling tree though

I have had ultra tropicals delivered without issue in the middle of winter.  I don't think they let packages see the cold for long enough to reach outside temperatures.  I am sure it can happen, but I have never had cold damage on any plant if I pick it up right when delivered.

yimnvs, it looks great!

I have both a grafted green sapote (the hawaiian one) and a few seedlings, all in 6in pots right now.  They seem to be doing well so far but I have had grafted ones before that just suddenly died around this size.   I figure the seedlings should be more hardy, but if the grafted one thrives that is even better.

Nick, my tree came from Harris Citrus FL in 2016.  I don't think they are in business anymore, unfortunately.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Hindsii seedling hardiness
« on: January 30, 2025, 08:02:05 AM »
I have a few excess hindsii seedlings, I will probably plant one out in the woods next to the Flying Dragon I planted there years ago, which is doing just fine.

Gets down to -5F here, but not often.  Doubt it will survive but a fun experiment

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Wanted - Shiranui Mandarin

I did some digging and it looks like scions can be shipped but they have to meet some fairly strict requirements. They’d have to be certified to be free of citrus diseases. The state seems pretty strict but for good reason I imagine.

Ah, sorry I can't certify any of that I'm just growing them for fun

I agree with Galatians522, atemoya

Button mangosteen/cherapu.  I got a few batches of seeds but even the healthy germinating ones just died soon after I put them in soil.   I would love a source of live seedlings that already have a few leaves

I got some "brazillian cherapu" but I am doubtful that it is on the same level.

Some pictures of my tree from May.

Really pretty tree, thanks for the photos

Citrus General Discussion / bonsai grapefruit
« on: January 27, 2025, 06:39:38 PM »
I was looking at this tree today thinking it was my sunquat.  The sunquat fruit looks nice but doesn't taste very good so I usually don't even pick them.  I noticed a split fruit was pink inside and checked the label, this is actually my Flame grapefruit on flying dragon.  It had three undersize fruit but they look and taste like normal grapefruits.  Not bad for a tiny tree with a 3/8" diameter trunk.  This might end up in-ground in my greenhouse again once I make some space.  I had a big one on some other rootstock that made tons of fruit but it was overly vigorous so I grafted this one onto FD to replace it.

My sumo tree, just took a few pictures today:

The fruits are large

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What happened to WikiFruit?
« on: January 27, 2025, 06:22:46 PM »
I think a collection of photos and personal anecdotes for each fruit would be very valuable, and this is something that doesn't exist anywhere else.

It would be almost equivalent to searching the forum posts for a plant, but more curated.  You could even write a script and use AI assistant to do an initial population based on forum history and public data and then let people take over to improve it and fix any AI hallucinations.

For example if you have a section on cold hardiness, can you have a stream of something like:
- no damage at 35F for 4hrs [link to post]
- light damage at 30F [link to post]
- killed to stump at 25F, stump regrew  [link to post]

... in addition to more mainstream sources such as books and industry publications

Just thinking of it, both UsefulTropicalPlants and Wikipedia are both written in a 'monotone' form. Although you can learn a bot from both sites, they are just 'blobs of information', and they aren't very entertaining.

I read the book Amazon River Fruits (see https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=43261.0)  and what I liked most about it is that it includes descriptions of how people interact with the trees and fruits, how they are gathered, market availability, how they are eaten, etc. with photos of happy kids and growers who consume them.

21
I have never tried the fruit, but I have read only great things about how it tastes

22
Annonacin was a surprise to me.  In soursop, sugar apples, etc.

And I am growing ackee, but at least that one is well known for being toxic

23
Thanks.

Good to hear they graft well, I will have to keep an eye out for scion sales.

Congratulations!

I bought one of these as a small seedling a year or so ago without doing much research.  I now understand they are dioecious (separate male/female trees) and take a long time to fruit.  Should I just cut my losses now?  The tree is doing great, growing rapidly and zero problems.  I have read 6-10yrs to fruit, but nothing about how big it needs to be to fruit.  If it can fruit in a 20gal I think can accomodate it.  I have a Ross Sapote seedling from seed fruiting in a 20gal so this might not be too far fetched.

If I were to buy grafted female and chuck this one are they self fertile?  Or still need a male tree?

I wonder what the odds of finding scion and successfully grafting are?

Raul once said in another post "Mammea Americana not [dioecious] all the time, in fact most of the trees can fruit on its own and only a few ones are male ones..."
