Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: ApMay Avocado 🥑 @ Lara Farms
« on: April 26, 2025, 10:03:10 AM »
I just can't jump on the hype bandwagon. Sounds like last year was the first year the tree was observed to have awesome April/May fruit in August.  Would like some conformation it is atleast a waterbomb in April before I spend some hard earned money on it.
Unfortunately, factual, authoritative information is not Fruitful Trees' strength.  He's not Richard Campbell, Jonathan Crane, Gary Zill, or Alex Salazar.  EVERTHING needs to be taken with "a grain of salt."

I think I'm going to experiment with grafting some Pollock branches onto the Simmonds tree I have.  Regarding Lula, yes, it would seem to be sun-tolerant.  My neighbor has a tree which is quite possibly a seedling of Lula with even better fruit.

He's also grafting and selling an avocado from Puerto Rico called Tito.  It's supposed to have a rich flavor along the lines of Hass or Oro Negro, but I don't think we know how well it grows and produces in SoFlo as it's a new introduction.

Is Tito the same as the Bumpy Avocado "Bumpycado" that got hyped up this year? I got a 3g Bumpy tree from Julian and on the pot, written in chalk, was "Tito".

No, it's different.

Has anyone been able to make it out to Trec to verify the hype?
Trec isn’t open to public
But I can say my friends who have gone say it’s cool
Meaning to the "general public," like a park or a commercial venture.

I can verify that I am hyped!

UF/IFAS TREC.  You don't count unless you've gone there.  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: hass or reed?

If you had a choice between hass and reed and had to choose just one, which would it be, and why?
You need both.  (I'm just going by what I've read on this forum!  And I trust Brad Spaugh.  He says Sharwil, too.)  Plant one in your yard, and one in your neighbor's.  ;D

Don't date palms require dry desert heat?

Reed is the best late summer for CA growers.  No doubt.

Pinkerton is hit and miss.  At first it seemed good but now my 10 year old trees are small and sometimes the fruit don't ripen well after picking.  But I may be waiting too long.  Sharwil is the same season and I prefer it or Hass over Pinkerton.
Do you think Sharwil could be grown commercially in CA?  Not at major scale, but for a niche, boutique market?

My neighborhood tree has set fruit.  I'm pretty sure it's Mauritius.  Also, next door to my son's house in WPB there's a tree that's loaded.  I haven't talked to the owner yet, so I don't know what it is.  But when the fruit is ripe, we'll be knocking on his door!  1/3 of the tree extends over the proper line.  I understand that by FL law the fruit still belongs to him.
If the fruit falls in your yard it is then yours.
I think that's the operative word.  If it "falls!"  Anyway, hopefully the guy is into sharing.

Simmonds tree.  Filling in at the center, as I was hoping.  Fruit set.

Monroe tree.  Fruit forming for next winter.

Yes I am sitting on 5. I am planting a diversity of stuff in the front part, then deciding if I want to grow anything to scale in the back
Lucky dog!  You have aroused great envy in this crowd.  ;D

@madininaNYC1 are those the first ripe fruits? Or potentially hangover from last season (meaning it's more a late variety rather than a super early variety)?
Would seem to be the case.

Out of all these suggestions, I like persimmon, pineapple, garcinias, and Scarlet Beauty plum.  I also like macadamia (if you can prevent the squirrels from getting them all), fig (if you don't have a problem with nematodes), and low-chill peach.  Are you sitting on an acre of land?

My Alano tree does not require any cross-pollination.  You can't beat it for flavor and sweetness.  IMO sapodilla is definitely a fruit you choose for sweetness, not for "refreshment."

No clue on the brix but for late season the flavor is great.

Only problem is how fast it goes bad from there.
Could you clarify what you mean by "how fast it goes bad?"

A day or two after it ripens.
Gotcha.  So you can't even keep them in the fridge.  Definitely a negative feature for Little Gem.

Yeah, I've def. gotten bit by some type of fruit tree bug. I told my wife I've discovered a passion I didn't know I had. I guess since we always rented until 2 years ago) I never did any planting and now it's my one and only hobby. I am watching a lot of videos and reading when I can. Good luck to you as well!
Call it a passion, a hobby, or an addiction (or all of the above).  It's something good to have that benefits you, your family, your friends, the community, and the world!  :)  And you meet the nicest people!

Walking around neighborhoods here in Miami, I've noticed a lot of older/big trees without much fruit (if any). These had plenty of fruit last year. I'm wondering if it's something with the variety or trees. Has anyone else noticed that?
Alternate bearing.

I appreciate everyone's input!! I was able to get two trees over the weekend.

Pickering 3gl and Dwarf Hawaiian 3gl.
Good choices for early season. For mid-season, you might want Cecilove and/or Orange Sherbet.  For late, you might want Honey Kiss.  All of those would give you a good variety of flavor profiles.

We need to start showing some love for Little Gem as an insurance mango.

Its the most bulletproof mango in my yard.
Would you say the flavor/brix has been consistent for you?

Is there any reason why the variety would come true to seed, or do we just keep our fingers crossed that it's similar enough?  By the way, it looks spectacular.  :)
HI John, mine was from seeds too, received them from Mike T, I guess because is a line that has been through several generations most probably will keep most of the characters of the fruit
Gotcha.  Sounds good.

I'm a fan of Pollock. In its off years we eat good. During the good years, we have many happy neighbors and friends. They get huge from rain and high heat.
Thanks!

Lots of folks with avocado trees out there, many in full sun presumably.  I'll take any anecdotal reports!  Alex, you grow a lot of different avocados.
