Kent mango with green skin . . . .
« on: August 16, 2023, 02:20:09 AM »
I recently wrote that I bought two mangoes from a Publix here in Tampa.  The stickers code them to Kent.

One is greenish-yellow  (mostly yellow) with a nice red blush on its cheek.  Ther other is mostly with a dark green skin and a slight red blush.  Both are hard but just starting to soften, but only very slightly.  And both are heavy weighting about two pounds each.

Oddly the dark green skinned one has more mango odor thatn the greenish-yellow one.

Is it possible that the one with the dark green skin could ripen and be edible ahead of the greenish-yellow one?

They both still need a few more days to soften up a bit more, but to know if they are ripe should I go more on softness or on smell?

Advice welcomed . . . . .

Cheers!

Color can be deceiving in regards to mangos in general. One shaded kent will stay green and could be ahead of the sunkissed one that formed later. Kent is typically not highly colored and green color at maturity is normal in my garden.

Those green kents that just appeared around looked immature.

Thanx for the helpful advice on the Kents' color versus ripness.

I'll keep testing for softening AND of course for the odor continuing to develop.

Cheers!

I second this. I bought many Kent mangoes at Mexican grocery store. I determine the ripeness by pressing the skin. When it gives in all around, it is time to eat. I left it a few more days after it became soften, and it became too sugary for my taste.
Kent is pretty good mango for beginner like me.
If I taste raved mango such as Sweet Tart, I may blow this forum. haha

Huh, I always buy Kent when I find them for sale and they have always been mostly green for me.  I avoid any with red because I assumed they were Tommy Atkins that got mixed in.

The green Kents have always been great tasting to me

Ladies and gentlemen, we are at peak Mexican Kent season. I picked up a dozen Kents at Aldi last week and they were absolute perfection.  Deep orange flesh, smooth as butter, and sweet like Sunny D. Relatively undersized as Kents go, but packed a flavor punch in a small package.
Now I know that store bought mangos have a poor reputation, but these Kents were better than most of the FL grown mangos I had shipped to me this year.  At $.59 each, it was a steal. Get ‘‘em before they’re gone.

When I lived in L.A. (prior to 1989), I ate a lot of great Kent mangos from Mexico.  They've got the science down when it comes to growing Kent, or Kent really loves the terroir!  All the other varieties coming out of Mexico were always so-so.  I'm glad to know I'm not just imagining this.

By your experiences, you seem to be describing what I see in most of my mango varieties during their fruiting season. The first mangos to ripen/fall off and on the ground of almost any variety, does so for a reason and.... it usually is not good. I expect first fruits of a variety to usually be less sweet and less tasty than middle to end of season variety fruits, and this is for all varieties I have and I have about 50 varieties.

I'm eating my next to last Kent now and it is far far better than my first kents a month ago. It is very sweet, with a hint of the tropical fruit punch type taste.
