Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal Winds . . .
« on: April 29, 2016, 02:07:16 PM »
Have you Socalians noticed the great number of windy days these last 4 weeks?  I've lost a bunch of mangolets to the frequent gusts
and wonder what my future  harvest might have been like without them....and there's more coming in the next couple of days I see,
at least out here in the desert....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Palm Springs mangoes in Bloom Feb. 2016
« on: February 19, 2016, 05:50:55 PM »
So, this hot weather has kicked my mangoes into bloom bigtime.  Enjoy the pics! Hope to have a nice
harvest....fingers crossed that no cold spikes return... Gary
(PS - this year I shut off all the sprinklers to the mangoes on Thanksgiving and perhaps
that was the kicker for such a bounteous bloom - I probably have control over watering
more than most)

Alphonso

Chocanon - a FIRST time spring bloom (it always has bloomed summer and fall)

Coconut Cream

Gold Nugget

Keitt

Kent

Valencia Pride

Venus (thanks Dan for the cutting that took!)

Bombay - another first time bloomer

Edward - always heavy blooms and only one huge mango the last two years - any tips of getting her to hold more fruit?

Glenn - top burned last summer when I mistakenly used Frost cloth instead of Shade cloth on a particularly hot day

Keitt #2

Lemon Zest

Maha Chinok 1 (some frost hit the top of this one)

Maha Chinok 2

Nam Doc Mai Seedling

Pina Colada

Rosigold

Young Lemon Zest

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free Papaya Seeds
« on: October 19, 2015, 12:01:34 AM »
So, I have about 40 papaya seeds from a Caribbean Red papaya.  For me, out here in the desert, it is a
very tall plant, has kind of a deep orange flesh and is sweet tasting.  Very similar to a good Mexican papaya.
If anyone is interested in having me send them some, please let me know...pm me I guess....

Thanks, Gary

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hawaiin Help Needed!
« on: April 04, 2015, 01:29:21 PM »
I'm visiting friends on Oahu - Kaaawa to be specific - and the lady of the house has expressed an
interest in getting a mango tree. So, we are tentatively planning to go out and get one at a local nursery, maybe on Monday.  They live right on the beach, driveway is off Kamehemeha Hwy, and my big concern is the constant prevailing winds they have in the large front yard of their property which blow through the house non-stop.  On the back side of their two story property is about a 8-10 strip of land.  That seems like the logical place to plant it, but it would be right next to the building and get that reflected afternoon sunny heat, maybe not an issue out here, especially with that wind...

Anyway, I'm thinking that's the logical place for it, but any advice Oscar, or anyone else has who understands the local conditions around here would be appreciated.  Also, advice on which variety of mango to buy, where near here to buy it, and any other thoughts would also be welcomed....

Thanks, guys......gary

So, it's a mixed bag this year cuz of the killing frost in January, but this is what's going on here in the sunny dunes of Palm Springs.....Enjoy!     Gary

Kent - also, a powerful flowererererer

This Lemon Zest lost about 6" due to frost - dormant so far but swelling...

I just thought this proud papa would post his Edward mango in full magnificent bloom
in anticipation of a reputation-breaking season ahead!  It's in an excellent southern
near-the-house location where it gets extra winter heat, though the curse is that it will
get too much in another couple months, wherein I will have to cover it with 40 - 50 %
shade cloth till all the fruits mature...

It's always, now, my first ripened mango of the season . . .

 ;)

Out here in Palm Springs, my weather station showed a rainfall total of .57 inches
since this weather system arrived yesterday - over 10% of our annual average
(4.5 inches).  I know you guys in L.A. and San Diego got some nice totals...
and I hear that the Camarillo/San Barbara area (think the mango professor and
Jacob 13) got some pretty large amounts....

Anyone want to report?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chocanon Mangoes forming in the SoCal Desert
« on: November 11, 2014, 02:03:18 PM »
I would really love to be a plant geneticist (is there such a title?) so I could explain why
this one mango tree of my 20+ has decided to set fruit now, in November.  It's flowered
every late summer for 3 years in a row and this year the flowering hung on to start setting
fruitlets.  And because of this weird phenomenon I've decided to graft a couple Lemon Zest
scions onto it as an experiment to see if this miracle mango "rootstock" will affect the flowering
and fruiting of a prized mango variety which normally begins in early spring.

Here ya go, folks....

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free Apple trees...plus more...
« on: November 05, 2014, 05:00:03 PM »
I have a 6 foot high by 5 foot wide 4-n-1 low chill apple and an Anna apple tree I'm willing to just give away
to the person that wants to come and dig them out of my garden - I'm willing to help.  I also have a 6 foot Minnie Royal and Royal Lee cherry tree, both planted in the same hole, that also can be dug up and taken away - how's $40 sound for them?

The desert out here makes it just too tough to grow them. I'll throw in some small seedling manila mango trees and a small red surinam cherry, too, if you like

I had posted this over on the Tropical Fruit Forum and was told it should be over here....so....
I've attached a couple pictures of the tree and what appears to be something
on some of the branches....is this gummosis or something like that?  Is it
treatable?  Sorry, some of the pics are a bit blurry....

Thanks, Gary

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Weirdest tie-up material for trees . . .
« on: August 30, 2014, 10:19:25 PM »
What's the weirdest stuff you've ever decided to use to tie up your trees with?

For me, I'm still using my last dog's (now deceased) snap-together collar
to tie up my pina colada and then there's the oxygen tubing I got from the
old man next door who moved away (and who is also now deceased....)
which I think is helping to hold up my Kent tree...

 ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya Growing arms...

This mexican papaya does taste great, but I'm wondering why some
of them grow these weird appendages....is it some elemental deficiency perhaps?

Our city has announced a free horse manure pick up program at a couple stables
we have.  You know - a bring-your-own poop bag/bucket and grab all you want kind of deal.
So.....what's the low down on this type of fertilizer for plants (mango in particular)?

I know it will be high in nitrogen, but any negatives as far as the quality of the nutrients?

Thanks, Gary

Tropical Fruit Discussion / TR Hovey Papaya - First fruit!
« on: April 14, 2014, 05:15:35 PM »
Well, it was quite large - probably about 5 pounds.  It didn't turn a uniform color (yellowish)
before I picked it and it probably was just a touch over-ripe when I cut into it. The damaged
flesh on the left flank of the papaya in the first picture is from where it crushed itself overnight
in the frig - pretty soft I'd say. Taste?  Well, I found it sweet but subtle, with the slightest perfumy taste to it
(if you have any idea what I'm talking about!)  I didn't like it as well as my Mexican Papaya, but my partner Joe
liked it better....so there you go!

I've got some seeds from this fruit if anyone is interested....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit Growth Regulator
« on: April 10, 2014, 01:22:41 PM »
Help me out guys.  I thought I recently read somewhere about some kind of regulator
one can use to modify the size of fruit crops on trees.  I'm afraid my Manila is an alternate
bearer as it went from 5 last year to what looks like a couple hundred minimum this year,
and I'd like to even out this situation.

Other than manually cutting off young bunches of fruit, is there something out there that
can control the amount of fruit?

Thanks.....Gary

So...I'll feather in photos like Mark (Mr. Clean) did as I go along (though no where's near that many)!!

CocoCream holding about 10+ fruits up to 2 inches long

Edward now has about 8 fruit.  Some still at 1/2 inch, but this was a cluster of 3
that looked promising, with the largest being almost 2 inches.  Again, remember,
I have never had a taste of these before!

Oh, and meant to post this yesterday when I took it - snow on mountains.  Was 44 degrees at 6 am!

My mango tree is impinging.....sorry....I mean this Traveler Palm is crowding
my new Lemon Zest Mango.  I'll dig it up for you and help you load it....

I live in Palm Springs,California.  The palm is about 7 years old, and 10 feet
high, though it could be cut back for transportation.  Please send me a PM
if you are interested.

Thanks, Gary

....and in case you're not familiar with it, this is what it's supposed to become as it gets bigger....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / El Bumpo Avocado? Naw, can't be....
« on: March 02, 2014, 06:14:42 PM »
Well I just lost my attempt at a post 2 minutes ago cuz I hit a wrong key.  So this will be the
short-winded version.  This picture is of two types of avo's that are growing at my former
house that I planted around 10 years ago.  I remember I planted semi-dwarf and I think one
was called Bacon - does anyone know if that's the  bumpy ones in the picture?

The folks who bought my place have allowed me to harvest them, if I come in to town, which is
where I got these a week or so ago.....

So....is the bumpy one the Bacon?  Not to steal that highly touted cherimoya of the same name.....

thanks, Gary

Fascinating article about getting apples, a temperate fruit, to produce in the tropics.
Written by Dr. Chiranjit Parmar, a good friend of Moshe Weiss' (my tropical fruit guide
in Israel).  Has great ramifications for growing all kinds of so called "colder climate" fruits,
but only where it never gets that cold.....just read....

Thanks Moshe......Gary
