Myrciaria Asa-Grayii / Plinia Asa-Grayii
« on: September 08, 2021, 04:00:55 AM »
This jaboticaba relative seems very interesting. It has rigged, purple fruits and has a very unique taste. Not much information on the species itself though. Has anyone tried growing this interesting species?  ???

Teen that enjoys finding new species to add to their collection

I have heard of it but do not have it in my collection. Another Forum member, BellamyTrees, has sold a couple of them on eBay recently: https://www.ebay.com/itm/403101463413?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=yfA9hWgzZmR7s3u6ql4WO95MKfc%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/403080934338?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=yfA9hWgzZmR7s3u6ql4WO95MKfc%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557. It looks like he has one currently up for auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/403141186740?hash=item5ddd1654b4:g:-vYAAOSwkSthOBQi.

My assessment is that it is a species that is purely an ornamental collector's item for someone collecting all the Myrtaceae. While the fruit is an interesting shape, it looks pretty much like skin surrounding a seed with no flesh or juice. Maybe, I am wrong in my assessment of it, though, if it has a unique, strong flavor.

mine has flowered in less than 5yrs very small bush,
this is definitely not a Plinia, it's a Eugenia or Myrciaria, I would say Eugenia.

at this point it's very rare, but not super exciting to me.  The fruit looks small with scant pulp.

It was classified as a Eugenia at first, I guess that's why?

That's neat though, keep us updated if you feel like it~!

not my favorite fruit, resinous flavor akin to suriname cherry

Adam, do you have any guesses as to what it is?
Still looks to be a pretty fruit.
The people who have fruited the Asa-Grayii say it is bland anyways?
