Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kampong Avocado soo good this year
« on: October 20, 2022, 01:19:39 PM »
Picked around October 10. This year they are spectacularly clean. The flavor 10++++. For those who value creaminess, AAA. Just clean tasting avocado,
Lacks the Catalina, Nishikawa and to some extend Oro Negro boiled egg taste that I don't like.   Delight on avocado toast or as side dish.  May be climate change is going to benefit some old varieties.
I wonder why this is not in every nursery in Florida, instead of the latest hype. On the late season spectrum this beats Monroe, Choquette, Lula, Hall. Not sure about the cold hardiness but has a lot of Guatemalan in it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone making small batch avocado oil?

Thinking about it just for home use.

I did a thread a few months ago on my Zutano Trees https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=47232.msg458951#msg458951

Now the issue I have is if in fact I have a Zutano tree. The fruit is growing very large
I picked one today is 28.2 oz.  I thought very large for a Zutano  mostly described as a 14-16 oz fruit.

I did checked the foliage and looks like picture of Zutanos I have seen, but the fruit seems too large. On the fruits I have seen online some fruits that look like mine other that don't. See below :
https://www.producemarketguide.com/produce/avocados/zutano-avocados   These dont look like mine.
https://preppings.com/item/2757/Zutano%20Avocado/  These Do look like mine.

My looks like a Choquette with the problem that Choquettes at this time of the year here are about a1/4 of the size.

I dont know of any other person in my area growing Zutano, It sure likes our heat and humidity extremely clean tree and fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Micro-grafting of Annona's
« on: June 17, 2022, 07:17:40 PM »
May be useful to others
On the first week on May, I grafted 12 small cherimoyas seedlings. 1/8 to 3/16 in in diameter. Several in the propagation tray all 12 took and are growing well as of today June 17. I did prepare the budwood by stripping the leaves a week before harvesting on the Thai Lessard and the others were LM#3 from Brad beautifully wrapped in buddy tape. Now all transferred to 1 gal doing really well. Very unexpected results 100 % small bag use.

Is anyone familiar with these devices, knows of a different ones etc. I will have over 200 Annonas in the ground and want to research and try devices to speed up the process. This is the only one I can find for sale in USA. I have seen videos from Peru but those are not available here.

Finally, these 3 Duke 7s  I have are over the juvenility period and are setting fruit.

Grafted on Waldin they make a very nice looking tree. Almost ornamental. Beautiful growth habit, compact and tall. Fruit is sizing up real nice and clean for Mid May.

A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Seems to me that as the temperatures go up in South Florida it becomes crucial to adapt to maintain a high degree of success. So as the weather warms up, I like to add the bag as an insurance policy.
I do it in avocado:

Depending on the budwood I can cover it with parafilm, leave some leaves or not but bag it. As the transpiration begins I monitor the bar for humidity and make a small venting cut.

In annonas works very well:

I noticed that some of the Annona's start to push only to dry up a few days later. Specially if we get a couple of dry and hot days. I graft then now using buddy tape for the union, parafilm to cover the scion and or Buddy tape (if they arrive that way) and the bag which will remain clean with no humidity until the new growth pushes out and transpiration begins. Small price to pay for success.

Has been working exceptionally well with mangos almost 100%

The question is: How do you adapt so we can all learn for each other.

In November 20, 2021 I purchased this Osmocote Plus in Amazon for $11.00 for the 8 lb bag. I saw it in Lowes for $30.00, now is $29.99 in Amazon.
At Nutrient, a commercial Agri Supply I have been buying Urea  for 50 lb bag for $16-17 now is $27.00
Diesel from $2.50 to almost $6 a gal.
And so on with every supply that I need to grow my trees well..

I'm irrigating less and using less fertilizer and hope the growers get better prices this year if, not it will be difficult for many.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing Zutano in Florida?
« on: April 27, 2022, 03:49:43 PM »
I'm very surprised of how well this tree is doing. First is beautiful, almost like a landscape tree. Huge leaves, dark green when mature, light green when new, nice contrast. Seems very healthy not affected by our usual diseases. Flowered late but the fruit is growing very fast and clean. No idea how it would taste in So. Florida
The tree is planted in a row of Donies all planted around the same time about 4 years ago. The Zutano is 3 times the size.
Does anyone in Florida has experience with this?

Cherimoya seedlings in trays. Each tray has 15-20 seedlings. These spent the winter in a propagation house. Very healthy, ready to transplant, 10+ inches tall. $4 each need to buy the tray.
They need to be picked up in Homestead. Any question?  PM.

4/26/22 Found two trays of Annona Montana is similar condition.

I have a couple of spots near or close to septic drain field and was thinking of grafting some atemoyas on Glabra for that area. Any successes?

I want to graft Annona Muricata Cuban Fibreless on to Annona Glabra.
From the pictures bellow my Annona’s M C F have flushed new leaves. The question is: Do I strip the leaves of the donating plant, if so, do I wait “X” number of days before cutting the budwood to wrap with parafilm and graft.   My rootstocks are healthy and strong.  Some have told me to leave some leaves on the scion and used a bag. I hate the bag but would do it if is an absolute necessity.
If this is not the suggested way, what are my options? I did graft various Annona’s last week of February with 10 takes out 11. Budwood was dormant.  But is getting hot and budwood is not dormant.

As always, your opinion is very much appreciated and valued

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / SENT MESSAGES NOT GETTING SAVED
« on: February 26, 2022, 12:42:12 PM »
DOES ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS?  I DON'T SEE ANY OF MY SENT MESSAGES. THERE ARE A FEW FROM 2012???

18
For the last few months, I have been looking for a replacement basically in case there were supply issues with the Schick.  I came up with these.
https://supply.co/products/single-edge-blades-black-label
Black Label blades are made in Seki City, where state-of-the-art technology fuses with ancient Japanese forging skills to produce the most renowned shaving blades in the world.

I have been using them this season and they seem very smooth, and also seem to last longer. Also a bit thinner. I have to measure.

Schick is also good, but there are options .

Is anyone growing this?

If you are keeping an eye on the wind, temperatures, dew point and RH you will know that right now (near sunset) - the wind is decreasing/becoming still, the dew point and RH have been low all day and this means - the temperatures may drop like a stone once the sun goes down. Looks like potential radiation freeze conditions before mid-night (maybe 10PM). I could be wrong - but this is to warn you all to watch the wind and temperatures closely once the sun sets. Best. Good Morning,

Bottom Line:

A stretch of very cold weather is expected beginning this weekend. Freezing temperatures and wind chills in the 20s are possible for a large portion of south Florida.

More Details:

High temperatures on Saturday and Sunday will struggle to reach 60 for many locations away from the coast. Saturday night will be the coldest night, both actual temperature and wind chill. On Sunday night, another night in the 30s is expected with widespread frost the main concern. Freeze watches/Frost Advisories/Wind Chill Advisories will all be possible as we draw nearer to the weekend.

I planted this tree about 2 months ago, A Red Annona Squamosa from Lara 3 gal grafted. It shed all the leaves from the shock, but it has been struggling to foliate again due to these little monsters, that are hard to kill.  As soon as the new growth starts to push, they kill it. I never had to deal with these black Aphis.  The ones in the video were spray two hours before with Bifenthrin and were still alive when I put them on the microscope. I suspect these in addition to sucking the sap they may be carriers for some wilting fungus.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reed avocado, welcomed surprise
« on: January 16, 2022, 09:19:27 AM »
I have this Reed tree since 2013. In the last few years never paid much attention to it because by the end of December all the fruit was in the ground and before December the fruit was small and not reach it best maturity.
This year seems to be different. The tree has 40-50 fruit, it is holding them well, the fruit is continuing to grow. I picked one in early January and allow it to ripen in the counter. These are the attached pictures. Very clean an acceptable taste.
The only explanation I have is that we had a cooler November, allowing the tree to make a transition without dropping the fruit.
I wonder if anyone else is growing it in Florida?

I have been observing Annonas for the last few months.

1. The Picture below are from a tree in a friend's orchard.  He does not know what it is, it was there before he got there. Is a very dark mauve color almost black. Can you guess if it can be identified?

2. The other green squamosas on the premises have a small winter crop, but about 40% of the fruit got mummified by the borer.  I have been noticing this a few times I have seen this mauve tree, it has no mummified fruit.  Are the people growing mauve squamosas notice less incident of the borer in them vs the greens?  Or this is just a fluke?

I read a lot of different choices. Some people germinate in bags using different media, some say they allow the seeds to dry, then hydrate, stratify seeds etc. etc. etc.

What is what works for you on a consistent basis?

Your input is appreciated
