Kampong avocado pear shaped?
« on: November 02, 2022, 11:13:19 AM »
My top-worked to Kampong tree is holding its first fruit this year. They are distinctly pear-shaped as you can see in the photos - has anyone seen them like this before?

I have had some avocadoes that were supposedly "kampong" that looked like that.  This year I'm going to get a chance to try some that are from a tree that is definitely kampong, so I will respond here once I do.

Great please do. Do you know where the pear shaped Kampong came from? I can't remember where I got my budwood.

Thank you for responding. Do you mean the variety is common in those places, or that the variety is commonly pear-shaped in those places?

I purchased them from a farm called Siggi's in Miami.  I heard that he had the Kampong avocado and I wanted to try them so I purchased some from him.  This was several years ago.  I will be going to a different farm soon where the farmer is very detail oriented about the variety, I will try to post here with pictures of the "true kampong" and I will see if there's any pear shaped avocadoes on the tree as well.

Overall the flavor of the pear shaped kampongs I tried several years ago wasn't as amazing as I was expecting given how favorably it's discussed but I will also try to report back on the flavor.

Hi, so the farmer said his kampong avocadoes were not ready yet and he is expecting them to be ready in Dec/Jan.  He didn't take me into the field today since he already had picked everything before my appointment.  I will respond as soon as I can but please remind me if I don't post back.

The latter. There being many different types of avocados and many are pear-shaped

Definitely not pear-shaped. Do you have any idea what this might be that I have? I got the budwood from someone
in Florida but I can't remember who!

Kampong is not.
I agree. Can you slice a fruit  leave the seed in it and take a picture.

On a brighter note, most trees with ripening fruit at this time of the year in Florida, are really good. Many seedlings of Waldin around with excellent tasting fruit. Your profile mentions you are at 2700' elevation. That fruit may need more time. It can also be a Hall seedling.

I'm going to wait a bit longer for this fruit but when I cut one open I'll for sure share the pics. How frustrating to wait three years thinking I had Kampong and not have it 😡. Carlos do you sell budwood, or would you? I don't know of a trustworthy source of this variety.

I realize that, but the farmer I got it from is an expert in tropical fruit so I feel pretty confident it is Kampong.  It has the "walnut" flavor you describe and a very thick skin as well.

Pollenizer can influence seed shape, which can then influence fruit shape, so that's probably the difference here. If it was pollenized by something that produces elongated seeds vs spherical seeds, you might see that much variation in shape.

These are mine, mostly pear-shaped. Still unwilling to come off the tree. I did harvest one and I'm eating it now -,creamy and delicious although I think it would've been even more so if it had stayed on the tree longer. The Campbell PDF says "ovoid to pyriform", so ours qualify I think.

I'm glad you like the fruit!  That's the most important thing, IMO
