2014 Jackfruit Jubilee at Fairchild
« on: May 31, 2014, 09:15:51 PM »
Fairchild is bringing back the Jackfruit Festival.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will celebrate one of the most intriguing of tropical fruits, the jackfruit. Participants will learn about its enticing taste and curious fragrance, how to grow it, and what varieties most suit differing tastes.
We will have recognized speakers presenting information on planting and pruning, pollination and the variety of cultivars available in South Florida. Tree sales and cultivar tasting follows the presentations.

Lectures

Great News!...When they had this fest years ago, it was AWESOME....attendees got to taste around a dozen cultivars and there was lots of fruit, not just small samples. They also sold a bunch of grafted trees and some hybrids. This is another one to put on your calendar for sure....

Hopefully something more than the norm.  Wonder who is grafting the trees that they will be selling.

That's great. Hawaii should someday have a jackfruit as well as a Durian festival. We have an avocado and mango festival which are just ok. The breadfruit festival in kona has been a very good one.. Jackfruit deserves more attention

There used to be a mango festival in Kau for many years, but the person who organized it moved away and it petered out. There has been a very good breadfruit festival on coast of Puna now for 3 years running. The problem is not lack of fruit, but lack of people willing to organize them. Never go to events in Kona, driving 6 hours round trip to attend a festival is just not worth it.

I have been wishing/praying for this weekly for the past 3 months, since I read Noel's post somewhere about how good they used to be.  I asked Noris a few months ago.....WOOHOO!!  Looking forward to it.

I know there is not lack of fruit. But lack of good varieties out there it seems. Most are old seedlings that don't produce quality fruit and very few nurseries are producing grafted jackfruit here on the islands... Frankie is the only person I know who attempted introducing many different grafted varieties into hawaii intended for sale down the road but even he doesn't keep up with the jackfruit grafting these days. Plant it has only  2 varieties available ...

I wasn't talking specifically about jackfruit. But even with jackfruit it's a catch-22 situation because a festival will promote interests in new cultivars, but if people feel there are not enough cultivars around to start a festival then the situation will never improve. Anyway, there are some people growing jackfruit cultivars, but it's in private yards and you just don't know about it until they are drawn out by a festival or similar event.

This Fairchild jackfruit affair is a sign of the improving Florida economy. People have the cash to plant new exotic stuff in their empty spaces

Thought Rob would've posted his Economist post again.  Yes, the sign of improving economic conditions in FL is measured by Fairchild Fruit Festivals! ;)

the jakfruit samples will have been frozen during jakfruit season and defrosted for eating at the festival. does not sound too appetizing.

Thanks, BradFlorida!    I really enjoyed the one many years ago.

And by September I should have 4 nearly dead jackfruit trees to replace.............

List is not that appealing and with the fruit in their frozen state (as stated in their original release), pass...

‘Fairchild First’ sounds interesting, if it does yield 1kg fruits and can be productively maintained at 3m height- as claimed. Has anyone tried it? Growing / tasting report?
