Cold Hardy Citrus / Root stock question
« on: November 16, 2019, 03:35:29 PM »
I found this old rootstock in a pot outside. I was cleaning out pots from my wreck of a greenhouse and found this trifoliata that was still alive. The citrus that was grafted to it died a few years back. It has sent up a few branches and I was wondering if I could air layer all of them at once, come next spring. I know trifoliata is difficult to root but was wondering if air layering would work.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Frost Protection
« on: October 19, 2019, 08:08:21 PM »
Well it's getting a chilly outside so I wanted to ask opinions on frost protection. So far I only have 4 that will remain outside this year. 3 in the ground and one in a pot. I was looking at Agfabric but does it really help on those really cold days. I was also looking at a MIgardener video and he wraps his trees in bubble wrap and a garbage bag. A few years ago I used a light and a PVC small greenhouse to protect a meyers lemon. I saw this on pinterest. I might build my pvc covers like this.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Trifoliata Seedling Questions
« on: August 30, 2019, 06:33:40 PM »
The seedlings that are growing from the seed that I planted are growing faster than the seedlings that I dug up from around the tree. The seeds were from green (unripe) fruit. Is there any reasons why they would grow faster? Also one of the dug seedlings has turn into hard wood. Why would something so small develop hardwood? All of the seedling, dug and seed, are about 2 to 2 1/2 inches tall.
Seedlings that I dug up

Seedling from seed of unripe fruit

Seedling with hardwood

Cold Hardy Citrus / Cold Hardy Citrus Obsessed
« on: August 14, 2019, 08:13:38 PM »
I have become cold hardy citrus obsessed. I told my family to cut me off from buying anymore citrus plants, as they have paid for most of them. I may need to call Stan Mckenzie and ask him to cutt me off from buying any more. Hee Hee My yard is only 140 feet by 140 feet. I had not planed on planting any of the trees in the front yard but I must, since I have bought so many citrus plants. What are your citrus numbers?
I now have
14 (1 gallon citrus)
3 (5 gallon )
and lots of cuttings and seedlings.
Some of these will be grown in pots, but a lot of them will eventually be planted outside.
What is a girl to due when she is obsessed?

Cold Hardy Citrus / When to Plant in The Ground.
« on: August 10, 2019, 04:26:20 PM »
I have been advised not to plant my 1 gallon plants in the ground until they are larger. What do you find is the best size for a citrus before you plant it in the ground? Also which is the latest time of the year to plant in the ground for zone 8. Also I have grown a few plants from seed this year. I usually put several seed in a cup. How many inches should I let them get before disturbing them for re-potting?

Does anyone have any information on the dragon lime. I can see it has flying dragon in it. I have a cutting that is still alive since the first week of July, so maybe it will survive. I have done a search of the forum and I could not find any info on the dragon lime.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Cuttings not rooting
« on: August 03, 2019, 12:17:56 PM »
I have these citrus cuttings that I have had in pots since April. They are still green but have not put out any roots are leaves. 3 are orange cuttings and one is a Lisbon lemon cutting. Does anyone know why this is happening? Usually they turn brown and die if they are not going to root.
