Title: Can allspice fruit indoors in a pot?
Post by: Acoalwell on September 18, 2021, 11:42:05 AM
As title says- can allspice be grown indoors in a pot and obtain fruit? (outdoors for hot summer months)

I believe so. I have an allspice that I used to keep indoors during the winter. It does well as a houseplant. Mine is about 4 feet tall and has flowered the last 2 seasons, but no fruit set.

I'm doubting that allspice is easily fruitable indoors. Still waiting on flowers here, and our tree is 9 feet or more, outdoors. Seems it would need more intense light and humidity.

Having said that, I would still go for it, and hope you prove me wrong and laugh in my face for doubting.

Beautiful tree, with useful leaves and sticks. Don't need fruit to be worth growing.

I grill with allspice leaves and sticks in the smoker box. Yum

I believe that Allspice is dioecious.  You would probably not see fruit on a single plant, indoors or outdoors.

That's great to hear, I didn't know you could use the leaves! Thank you!

It is dioecious. But there are occasional trees with hermaphrodite flowers that set fruit on their own. But if you are starting from seed, and only have one tree, your chances of getting fruits is very low.
