Campomanesia -can they be grown in a pot?
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:18:46 PM »
The title pretty much says it all.  I have a bunch of Campomanesia  plants, and I was wondering if they are suitable for container culture or would they be best planted in the ground.  Any suggestions?

Some of my subject plants

Campomanesia phaea

Campomanesia rhomba

Campomanesia sessifolia

Campomanesia xanthocarpa

Campomanesia  schlechtendaliana

Thanks,
Richard

yes and no....

some will stay small, (C. adamantium, C. xanthocarpa var. littoralis, etc) and fruitful for many years, in a container that's less than 30 gallons...but some campomanesia species , such as C. lineatifolia (Cas guava) will not fruit until they get very large...and will require a pot larger than 30 gallons.

I bet they could be airlayered or rooted...so they can be maintained at a smaller size...but seedlings will be a different story.

Richard,
How do you make that cambuci  look so good?  I have been fighting with cambuci (C. phaea) for a long time.  They look sick despite all care I give them.  What is your recipe for cambuci's  happiness?  Please help!

Adam, just a typo....lineatifolia is "perfume guava".

Cas guava/goiaba-da-costa rica (psidium friedrichsthalianum) is a fantastic fruit that I call the poor man's cupuacu! Cas guava makes the best jellies , juices, ice cream, liqueur, batidas (mixed drinks).....and on and on....I make cas guava jelly mixed with jabuticaba skins. It is absolutely delicious!

Adam and Berto,

Thanks for the kind comments

I have you to thank for the deep pots. In many posts you have extolled their virtues and since I have started using them all my seedlings seem to do much better.

With the phaea it is simply survival of the fittest. I have at least 6 others that do not look nearly as nice. The one in the photo was the one that grew like a weed.

I have been watering them with half RO water and half well aged tap, with quarter strength Dyna-grow.  After killing more seedlings than I care to admit I feel that I am finally figuring things out.

Hi Richard, congrats for your plants, look amazing to me too.

I only have a planted c. guazumifolia and some poted c. lineatifolia, all doing fine now (they like moist), will get some xanthocarpa later as 1 I had is dying.

C. guazumifolia is about 4 to 5 years old and 1.8 m tall, it fruited for the first time this summer and was great (I whink it could fruit in a big pot); c. lineatifolia are doing fine in 1 gal pots for now, 30 to 40 cm tall; yes... I will have to plant one of them in the grown to wait for some fruits in 3 to 4 years from now...

I am about to see if Campomanesia schlechtendaliana can be fruited in a pot. It was not one of the species specifically mentioned by Adam as one that can be fruited in a pot. Hopefully, it will fruit at a relatively small size since I just acquired some seedlings.

Apparently there is a variety called Campomanesia schentendaliana var Rugosa which stays smaller more like a 10’ bush vs var schentendaliana that is a 30’ tree. I wonder which variety is in cultivation in the USA.
