I have also successfully used last year's pollen. Air dry in a coffee filter and store in the freezer like matty suggested.

Holy cow. Hope you can hire some help soon. 12 miles doesn't seem like too much of a commute but I'm from California.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon Fruit thread.
« on: April 11, 2022, 06:55:00 PM »
Today I ate a very ripe Colombian yellow dragon fruit (the small ones) and it tasted strongly of lychee instead of the usual sweet but nondescript flavor. Normally these start to turn yellow in November and I pick in January, but they are so small I hadn't bothered. I finally picked it today because it was getting sunburned. I suppose I should let them hang longer in the future, the critters don't touch them since they are covered in thorns.

Interested in a December order. Located in Florida. Thanks!

Wow, these look great! Glad everything made it through the frost.

Mine get clogged with goop every once in a while. It is caused by iron eating bacteria living in the lines.

This is a good enough time for it to happen, everyone is used to empty shelves. Just shrug and buy something else.

If your primary goal is to eliminate sugar -
I have canned kumquat preserves (cut in half, squeeze out seeds) on the stove with no added pectin and half a cup of sugar for 6-7 pints. Might be able to eliminate that entirely for your diet. Kumquats are naturally high in pectin, not sure if NZ lemonade is too but it's worth a trial, I think. After cooking/canning the fruit isn't complete mush and it's a good alternative to jam.

Macadamias, passion fruit, kumquats, navels, handful of blueberries and the last yellow dragon fruit.

I should be moved out there before July, and in need of trees :)

I heard it mentioned a couple months ago through CRFG San Diego. As it might be more tolerant of our soils than blueberry. Not sure if the person followed through and grafted.

Sounds like making stock from bones.

Why do you need to peel the outside layer, is it bitter?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yellow strawberry guava: sun vs shade
« on: December 20, 2021, 06:12:43 PM »
I heard someone else say cooler temps help the flavor. Maybe that's the key, since your shaded ones produce in late fall instead of late summer.

Mine is under a house eave probably half sun. This year, the early ones were bland and late ones were good. Think I picked the last one a week ago.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Processing butia/jelly palm juice
« on: December 01, 2021, 05:06:23 PM »
This year I ended up with 13 lb of jelly palm fruit. I froze it, then thawed and tossed in the food processor to make seed removal easy (last year with a smaller crop I used a knife to peel off flesh). Followed https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_07/butia_palm_jelly_powder.html just for the juice part, but I repeatedly kept having to strain out pureed pulp that settled to the bottom.

Any easier way to process given the large seed? Do any juicers work? It crossed my mind an apple press on the food processed pulp might work.

This link should get you to the map tool

Thanks. That's the wrong district, but I found the correct one. There is one giant generic permit for Vero Beach, and a whole lot of wells around me since we don't have city water pipes. Looking at the completed permits, now I have an idea how deep the well will be.

Is p. decaisneana supposed to be self fertile? I have pollinated 6-8 flowers so far and none have set fruit.

Hi Val,

Congratulation you succeeded to root the cuttings.   Yes, it is self fertile.  You were not the first person to ask me this question.  Fruits mostly will drop if the vine is in container.  You have to put it in ground.  If the vine is the ground and not strong, fruit will not be set.

Hoang

Thanks for responding. It's in the ground but perhaps a bit small still. I'll keep trying.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Blueberries in FL

How are you failing? Do they die or do you not get fruit? Curious because I'm moving near you (Vero) and want to continue growing blueberries.

In CA I don't bother putting them in the ground, the soil is wrong. As other people said there are Florida varieties, some of which I have here thriving in peat/pumice mix in half wine barrels. Add sulfur once a year and acid fertilizer as needed, I don't adjust my water pH (it's 7.5-7.8 ).

Do dragonfruit freeze well?

I picked my first blacktail mountain watermelon today, it was bordering on too sweet. I almost brought it to the party but didn't think it was quite ready.

Thanks guys. I do want my well(s) to be permitted so I might ask for more details when I get there. I'm buying 5 acres on a former citrus grove in Vero Beach and I close at the end of the month.

a home well is not a irrigation well

What's the difference? Diameter? I'm building a house in Florida and want to be set up for irrigating a couple acres.

I'll be bringing stone fruit, melons, papaya, and maybe blueberries.

Are you bringing blueberries just because you think you need to show proof of Vaccinium?

I refuse to do that ever.

In truth I'm not sure if they're done for the year. Still some berries on the plants but not ripening, I'll check tomorrow.

I had given up on the seeds I planted in November, in a greenhouse. Started watering again once I saw this thread - and I have a sprout, finally. 8 months.
