Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anything in season in SE FL in early March?
« on: February 12, 2022, 03:03:30 PM »
I am going to be in Miami area then.  I am planning to check out the Fruit and Spice park but it seems they stopped updating their "what's in season" pages since Covid started

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pouteria pollination
« on: January 31, 2022, 09:57:09 PM »
I have three pouteria trees that have set significant blooms once or twice but no fruit or even fruitlets yet.  I don't actually know a whole lot about them, is it likely that they need same-species cross-pollination?  They are:  canistel (grafted, Bruce), green sapote (grafted), abiu (seedling).  I don't have more than one of each species.

The canistel is in-ground in my greenhouse and probably doesn't seem many pollinators.  The abiu and green sapote are in containers and were outside during bee season.

Citrus General Discussion / huge grapefruit blooms
« on: January 27, 2022, 09:19:12 PM »
My containerized Marsh grapefruit is completely covered with flower buds, to the point where it doesn't even look like a citrus anymore.  At its current size I will probably only let it keep six or so fruits, but the flowers will be nice.  I am thinking I might chop my Flame grapefruit in half and plant this one right next to it so they can share the same spot in the greenhouse.

I saw this at a nearby nursery.  No label.  Doesn't look like anything I've seen before.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best tasting eugenias?
« on: December 15, 2021, 11:04:08 PM »
Eugenias seem to be really easy to grow, and there is a huge number of varieties.  Any suggestions on best types?  I have only tasted surinam cherry (excellent) and pitangatuba (okay) so far.

Citrus General Discussion / when to pick Chandler pummelo?
« on: November 12, 2021, 11:52:05 AM »
This is the first year that my container Chandler has produced full size fruit.  Previous two years it is had made a few fruit that reached only grapefruit size.

Any suggestions on when to pick this fruit?  It is the only one on the tree so I can't do the usual sampling.

A couple years ago I bought a 'Mexican Cream' guava at a lowes or home depot store.  I noticed the fruit is pink, while Mexican Cream is supposed to be white?  Somebody mentioned in another thread that this has been very common and lots of mislabeled guavas at big box stores.

It made a lot of fruit this year, and it is pretty tasty.  I wanted a pink variety anyway... any idea what type it might be?  It looks more pear-shaped and avocado-like than the round pink guavas I see posted here often.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / seedlings unable to shed coat, lose seed leaves
« on: September 27, 2021, 11:07:38 AM »
I have noticed this happening with certain types of tropical seedlings.  A strong root emerges and digs into the soil, the seed is lifted into the air as the seed leaves begin growing, but the seed coat is never shed and the seed leaves die.  Luckily, because these tropical seeds are fat and full of energy, they tend to eventually grow new leaves and carry on fine.  I saw this happen to every single durian seed I sprouted, and now I see it has happened to every kepel seedling.  I remember that sugar apples had similar issues but not as severe, they usually got enough of their seed leaves out that the tips would simply die and drop the seed shell, and the leaves could open.

Is this normal?  Environmental?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / when to pick black sapote?
« on: September 21, 2021, 01:23:08 PM »
My seedling black sapote's first fruits seem to be starting to reach full size.  When should they be picked?  Are they like avocados where they must be picked and left to ripen off the tree?  Or can they be left on the tree until they become soft enough to eat?

They are still very hard if I give them a slight squeeze.

Citrus General Discussion / Osmocote Plus is cheap on Amazon right now
« on: September 01, 2021, 11:06:59 AM »
I have a price alert set up when it goes below $15 for an 8lb bag.  Currently $13 on Amazon, limit of 3 unfortunately.  It typically sells for ~$23 for an 8lb bag so I always stock up when it goes on sale as I go through 16lbs a season.

Citrus General Discussion / Another fruiting rootstock tree
« on: August 16, 2021, 10:56:11 PM »
I was pruning what I thought was my overgrown Cara Cara and knocked a few fruit off.  Still green but seemingly full size.  The fruit were unusually light, and now I see why.  This is rootstock fruit! Cuban Shaddock, I assume, as this was a Fourwinds tree from 2014.  It looks the remainder of the scion died this year and I didn't notice the rootstock took over.

This is the second rootstock tree I have had produce fruit at a very low node count.  The other is some kind of trifoliate orange, I believe C-35.

Should I just toss it?  I can't imagine why anybody would want this as a rootstock, and I'm not sure why Fourwinds used it.  It seems very vigorous.  The UCR description for Cuban Shaddock fruit doesn't sound appealing.  This unripe fruit I just ate had a lemon/lime/citron taste.

Citrus General Discussion / compact lemon options
« on: July 24, 2021, 12:35:24 PM »
Right now I have Eureka, Lisbon, St Teresa, Meyer, and Sunquat.   Only the meyer and sunquat are anything close to compact but they don't have the true lemon taste.  I bought the Lisbon to try grafting onto Flying Dragon, but the parent plant looks so vigorous that I'm doubtful that even the dwarfing rootstock will keep it tame.

this site seems to suggest Lisbon-on-Flying-Dragon is workable:

and here's a picture of what I am guessing is Lisbon-on-Flying-Dragon:

I guess I will have to try it and see.

Citrus General Discussion / uses for Finger limes?
« on: July 23, 2021, 11:03:25 PM »
Can anybody suggest some good uses for these?  I have a handful of ripe ones but aside from the novelty I haven't found a good use where they clearly outshine regular lime juice.  So far they are good in fruit sherbert/ice cream.   I'm going to try in guacamole too.

If they are resigned to the pure novelty bucket that is fine, I'll just keep mine pruned small.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / immature mango fruit dropping, seed rot?
« on: June 05, 2021, 08:34:32 AM »
My mango tree set a ton of fruit this year but they've been steadily dropping one by one, at sizes ranging from 1-3in.  Always the same pattern... tips turns yellow then the dimple near the tip turns black and opens up into a hole.  Even the largest one is about to drop from this.   Any idea what the cause might be?  Is this some kind of disease or nutrient deficiency?

Citrus General Discussion / mealybug destroyer ladybugs
« on: June 02, 2021, 12:07:49 PM »
The mealybugs in my greenhouse have been relentless.  I have been spraying them off with water every day, and the next morning they are back on all the fresh growth.  I ordered some mealybug destroyer insects and they just arrived.  So far it seems encouraging, they immediately started eating mealybugs when I dropped them onto the plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / monstera defeats rootmaker container
« on: May 05, 2021, 11:52:49 PM »
I hadn't really thought much about what "aerial roots" might mean as I never had this kind of plant before, but putting a monstera deliciousa in an air-root-pruning pot was not a good idea.  Can I just cut these root tendrils off to save the pot?  And then put it in a solid pot.  Though I think I'm going to have to get rid of it once it fruits... I just want to try the fruit.  I recently some gigantic ones that occupy more space than my entire greenhouse.  I don't know how well it would take to pruning.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / when to unwrap annona grafts?
« on: May 05, 2021, 10:31:39 AM »
I am thrilled that most or all of my ilama-on-cherimoya grafts seem to have taken.  Many are starting to push growth through the parafilm.

When should I totally unwrap them?  I am using zip ties to hold the cleft graft in place, and these zip ties will eventually restrict growth if I leave it too long.  How long until it should be confident that the graft is holding its own?

My trees are in a greenhouse so wind isn't a concern.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / high humidy sub-& tropicals?
« on: April 25, 2021, 11:37:37 AM »
Since I've now realized my greenhouse midday humidity is far lower than I thought, I am thinking about trying to create a humid section for the plants that require it.  Long term I want to build another greenhouse for high-humidty, high minimum-temp plants.

Can you tell me what tropical plants *require* high humidity?  So far I'm only aware of mangosteen and theobroma cacao (cocao).  What about other garcinias?  Eugenias?  Jabo?  Guava?

I assume citrus, mango, and annonas are better off dry.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / flies pollinate cherimoya?
« on: April 12, 2021, 10:00:32 PM »
I went to try paintbrush-pollinating my cherimoya flowers and when I approached them a few small flies flew out.  Are they normally pollinated by flies?  Bees?

A local plant store regularly has rooted lemon cuttings for sale.  Today I noticed they are selling what appear to be rooted cuttings of varieties I didn't know were able to root.  I'm not 100% sure these are cuttings, and I guess it is possible these are just doomed twigs that haven't actually taken root if the seller is being dishonest.  The algae growing around the base of the limequat suggests it isn't freshly cut.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / hilariously under-potted annona
« on: April 11, 2021, 05:32:05 PM »
How is this thing fruiting?  This shop constantly surprises me with the trees they have fruiting in containers that are a tenth of the volume of what I would expect is required.  Many look leggy and unhealthy but they are alive - and fruiting.

Also, any idea what species this is?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / is this a Eugenia?
« on: April 11, 2021, 05:23:10 PM »
I saw this tree at a local plant store and it has no label.  The leaves look similar to eugenia or garcinia to me.  It has a few small berries.   Looking online a bit it looks very much like allspice but not exactly... the allspice berries I see in photos look to change directly from green to purple while this has red transition, and the fruit stems look slightly different.  If it is something worthwhile I might go back and see if it is for sale, they were too busy today.

I was just doing ph testing on my greenhouse and container soils and am wondering if anything other than miracle berry needs a low ph?  That is, below 6 or so.  Tropicals and sub-tropicals, I'm not talking about blueberries and such.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / what are you guys doing with your cacao?
« on: March 15, 2021, 02:03:53 PM »
It seems a lot of people are growing theobroma/cacoa/"chocolate".  What are you guys actually doing with it?  Is it just for fun, because it looks neat?  Or do you eat the seeds and/or white pith?

I got a fresh cacao pod once from a fruit market and the seeds were kinda ok and the white part wasn't really something that tasted like food to me.  I definitely prefer very-dark chocolate to actual raw unprocessed cacao.  I'm just wondering if there is some popular use I'm not aware of.
