My mayhaws get what looks like cedar apple rust. I don't have any cedars anywhere within at least a mile that I've seen. I have another Hawthorne and Apple trees. Could they pass it between them? Thanks, Dan

My most productive grape (black Spanish) is in bright shade almost all day, but I tried the same thing with some muscadines and they don't produce. Give it a shot. D

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Propagating Malanga
« on: July 27, 2020, 09:19:27 AM »
I picked up a good sized chunk of malanga at the market and would like to grow it. I searched it and the procedures seem to conflict from site to site. Some say to cold stratify, others say just plant it. Plant it deep, plant it shallow. Is it like taro...just stick it in some soil and it will grow? It's got a bunch of eyes and is large enough that I think I can start 2 or 3 plants with it. How do y'all do it? Thanks, Dan

That's awesome! I didn't think they would survive long enough to make fruit here. Good job! D

I might be up for a trade. How is the fruit? D

I take fruit from my various producing plants to work and offer it up. Watching the reaction from people who have only seen perfect supermarket fruit is humorous. They recoil at my fruits with spots and stings etc. The others are happy to eat it. D

I've used it for years in S. Texas Summers. No problem, other than it always seems to rain after I apply it! D

Chris, Who did you get the cuttings from? I'd like to try some as well. Thanks, Dan

Rodney, The plant you sent me is really vigorous. Thanks!

Seawalnut to the rescue again! I have a bag of rose soil that has what looked like those mushrooms erupting from it. I decided not to use it anyway, but you just confirmed it. Thanks! D

You might look for used fencing online ( Craigslist etc), or if there is a restore or even a contractor in your area. D

They haven't been bothered by snails yet. I will have to pot them up soon. So use slightly acidic, unamended soil. Keep them in moderate shade. Do They like a lot of water? Thanks! D

These gevuinas are small (10cm) seedlings. How long should I wait to fertilize them? Until I repot them? Should I soak coffee grounds in water and foliar feed? Should it be a weak solution? Thanks, D

If they had died here in the States they would have been added to the coronavirus lists. I think if someone tests positive and they are hit by a bus they would be listed as a coronavirus fatality. I'm not big on conspiracies, but there is more going on than is being reported. "Don't look at the man behind the curtain!" D

They arrived in great shape and after a few days seem to be pushing new growth. Thanks! D

That is really interesting. I had never heard of cyrtocarpas before. It looks like something I'd like to grow, but I couldn't find any cold hardiness info. Are you growing any cacti that produce fruit? Optunias are very useful for edible pads and fruit. It also helps lower blood sugar. D

From what I have read, seeds are not the way to go. That's why I asked about root or stem cuttings. I'd like to get several going.
We have discussed genuine avellana before. I finally got a couple. Now I need to keep them alive....D
