Do you prune young Mango trees?
« on: June 10, 2021, 05:05:12 PM »
Do you prune Mango trees before they have fruited? If so...how to prune them? Hollow out the inside like you would a more older tree? Thanks

Hey a guy named Matt out of Punta Gorda has a YouTube channel called "What's Ripening". He prunes trees that are holding fruit and just posted a few videos on how and why he does it. Check it out!

Chris at TT also does that.
Be very careful and mindful of what you sow, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

The whole video is good to watch, but the part at 8:00 minutes describes formative pruning of young mango.

I followed that & continued the tipping of 50 new trees after every flush for 2 years and annually opened up the center. I'm on the third fruiting season and will be doing some size control directly after harvest.

Nope.  No tip pruning on any of my trees.  Planted as a small 3 gal, their natural growth and shape is perfect.

At my previous house, I tip pruned and it served no benefit (compared to my current Ronco "set it and forget it" as to pruning small tree for shaoe) and really made branches weaker on the smaller trees.
