I got another couple months to go before i can taste some fresh lychees. Looks like Sweetheart will be first this year. It's about thumb size now. Fruitsets is very good so far. Maintaining the fruits is the hard part.

Hi Rain,

Here's the instructional youtube video I learned from. Credit goes out to him. Only difference, I didn't use coconut coir. I only had sphagnum moss available at the time.

Hi K-Rimes

Your seedlings fruitset looks pretty good.  How long did it take for your seedlings  to start blooming? Do you remember what variety the seed came from. Always interesting to see new seedlings fruit. I tried grafting some seedlings to a mature tree to speed up blooming with no luck. Did it with lychee and Longans. Didn't work for me.

This year Sweetheart seems to be in the lead for me. It's looking to be a good year for lychees.

Hi Rain
I did a smilar root grafting on my sweet tart mango in March.  But, I think it failed. Still don't see any roots.

Lychee flowers are starting to open here in Socal! All of the varieties i have on my multi grafted tree is blooming nicely. The only cultivar having issues with blooming is Kaimana. It's been 2 years in a row with no blooms.  The branch gets plenty of sunlight and is large enough to make a good size airlayer. But, still no flowers. Anyone else in Socal growing  Kaimana having blooming issues? How are your Kaimana trees doing? Usually all my grafts push out flowers within 2nd or 3rd year.

The only problem with some trees this year is too many male flowers. Most likely it will re-bloom again.  So far all the flowers look healthy.  I did spray with sulfur before the rain.

It's definitely possible.  But only for short term. After 4 to 5 years, the graft will start to decline. Here's a couple of grafts I did on gold nugget 2 years ago. I didn't have any rootstocks at the time, so just for temporary to keep scions going. Best to graft wampee onto wampee

Oops,  I guess  i read the post wrong too

Any pictures of the fruits for these two longan varieties? Is the Ping Pong really the size of a ping pong ball?

Anyone else notice their lychee blooms have reddish color? I have an unlabeled lychee graft showing red ovaries. Never noticed this in lychees before. Maybe might turn out something special.

Very interested in the real Crispy Honey lychee X longan hybrid.

For those of you that grow the SweetCliff, can you ID which ones are SweetCliff from the picture below? Does these look like lychee/longan hybrid fruits?

Hello lychee growers,

I would like to share the progress of an Emperor lychee airlayer. I started the airlayer on 5/3/23 and planted in ground on September 20, 2023. Tree is almost 1 year old today 4/25/24. It's already starting to produce. Will post updates as fruits develops.

Seng, your probably right about roots not getting enough air. The soil is very mucky. I should clear the mulch out to let it dry out more.

Mines look terrible.  Not sure if it's the cold, Californica rootstock, or too much water.

Hey Max, is your tree in the ground or in a pot? Besides the yellowing, I also see some burnt leaf tips towards the back of your picture. Did your trees have any close contact with the trees imported from China? I’ve noticed that the trees that were imported from China and had root knot nematodes tended to have yellow leaves like yours. I wonder if any cross contamination may have occurred with RKN infested trees?

Simon
Hi Simon, the trees are planted in the ground. It’s all grafted on Californica rootstock. The Scions are from China trees.  I’m positively  sure there’s no cross contamination with the RKN infested trees. Hopefully the trees will be better when Spring comes around. As for the burnt leaf tips, I think I threw down too much fertilizer pellets.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone Have Ripe Avocados in December?
« on: December 28, 2023, 04:06:50 PM »
A lot of the fruit have that flat lopsided spot on bottom as well.  And the thin skin, light flesh with the few fiber spots on the top.  And the little funny thing that sticks out of the bottom of the seed.  And the distinct seed shape.

If i had one to taste I could easily tell for sure.  They have an off aftertaste that only bacon has.

Kaz, for sure leave fruit on all those trees until april or May or whenever and then check if the bottoms are cracking.  I think the derek, nancy and hamanda are all bacons.

The last fruit I ate had quite a few fiber spot. Not very pleasant.
