I was unsuccessful sending a PM but I am interested in 1G plant and scion for Green gold.  I am also located in Santa Cruz, and I can pick up.  Please PM me with info.  Thank you!

PM sent. Since you’re local, I sent you some of the varieties I have in 5g as well.

Do folks have experience growing velvet tamarind outside of its native range? Has anyone made observations of their plant after experiencing a frost? I have a few seedlings that have been growing steadily in my passive greenhouse in Santa Cruz CA 9b. Our winter was so mild this year, they have had zero damage. Most sources list them as tropical. Thanks for any info!

That's a nice looking frut. So the brown spot/marks on the outside of the fruit means it is very sweet, didn't know that.

None of my fruits had any marks on the skin like yours. Can you take a brix reading, I'm just curious how much sweeter it will be when the fruit looks like that. If you don't have a Refractometer, I have an analog one I use so send me half a fruit and I can do the brix reading for you.

I don't think it has much to do with how sweet they are. I can take a brix reading for you though on my next fruit. Sometimes the skin gets sugar spots on it that makes the skin sort of crispy. It might have more to do with sun exposure than sugar content. I've had fruit without spots that was just as sweet.

This is fruit from a plant gifted to me without a label. The person who gave it to me said it was likely McDill, Vernon, or Malibu #3. From the fruit I've tasted, I think McDill can be ruled out. This fruit is much better than the McDill fruit I've tasted. Its fruit is variable in size, and it's excellent tasting. No bitterness, with crisp sugary skin. The bottom point of the fruit is typically off center. Anyone want to weigh in?

How did the Walton taste?

What happened to the outside skin with the markings?

This was my first taste of Walton, and I only had two fruits to try. I should have several dozen to compare in about 6-8 months. The tree is loaded with small fruits right now. The tree is about 5 years old.

These first two fruits were excellent. The custard flavor was more pronounced in these fruits compared to others I’ve had, mixed with the usual white sapote flavors. The fruits were on the brighter flavor profile side, which I think some folks compare to citrus notes. The skin had some russeting, which seemed to be from a concentration of sugars near the skin, resulting in a sort of crunchy, sweet skin. The skin was a little thick/tough due to the russeting, and I didn’t find it appealing to eat. There was no bitterness in any parts of the fruit. I think it’s one of the better cultivars I’ve tried, but most white sapotes taste that way when I’m eating them! 😂

Reeed, so how was the taste of your cocktail this year? I just picked the last fruits from the tree before the gardner got them.

I thought cocktail grapefruif/pomelo tasted better than the Valentine, but others that I gave both fruits like the Valentine more. I like the sweet with a little tart, the Valentine has no tartness.

Mine have been outstanding this year. Like a sweet mandarin flavored grapefruit, with some other aromatics in the mix. I'm not sure I can rank Cocktail, Valentine, and Tahitian as a favorite. I think they're all excellent and worthy of a space in the garden. So for, my Cocktail tree does seem to be much more productive than the others, but my trees are still young. The fruit pictured below was seedless. I think I'll get an insect net to prevent pollination. The seediness is the only drawback to Cocktail in my opinion.

Thats the impression im getting too, with the boosting in cold weather and being stressed in the hottest times of the year.  I sold some to a guy who lives in the redwoods, an old clear cut that is second growth forest, and he has very rich soil. The plants are doing pretty amazing for him and he has multiple seedlings flowering. I think he'll probably be one of the first to fruit it in California. Seems like they enjoy the low intensity light up at his spot.  Wish I had more of that around my area.

I just visited his garden and his plants look better than ever. I don't think they recieve any direct sunlight. I can't figure out why mine languish so much. I probably am not getting them enough water.

Blenheim is listed at 400 chill hours, and is still my favorite. On the negative side, it is not the most disease resistant, and alternate bears. Flavor Delight and Cotton Candy apriums are pretty good, and are very early, which is fun.

I have some seedlings growing in a passive greenhouse. I agree, that the fruit is really fun and tasty. I doubt they'll survive outdoors in my climate (CA 9b), but if someone has heard otherwise, I'm eager to believe! Haha... These plants are from seeds from a fruit tasting Bush2Beach hosted.

Reedo, nice looking Walton. How was the taste of your fruits? I haven't tasted the Walton yet.

They still haven’t ripened. I’ll post a review when I taste them. The tree has been setting fruiting nonstop for months. Looks like I a long harvest season this year.

Soooo… tell me about why this giant tree in my yard has you all excited

Due to the citrus quarantine, and the fact that the CCPP doesn't offer budwood, it's impossible to source legally in California. The fruit I've tasted at CRFG events was excellent, and definitely worth introducing at the CCPP, but the process is expensive. It's currently not on their "Upcoming" varieties list.  https://ccppdms.ucr.edu/ccppdms/upcoming_varieties

In addition to the farmers market fruit that Bush2Beach referenced, the closest store I've found them at is Steve's Philipino Market in Marina. I'd call ahead. Their produce quality varies dramatically. 3056 Del Monte Rd Marina, CA 93933

You can find them at Casadores in Watsonville sometimes, but the price is usually really high, and the fruit quality is meh.

I've ordered fruit from Rincon Tropics, and the quality was great. https://www.rincontropics.com/shop/

I'm planning a trip to ecuador next month. Plane tickets are high right now I payed 850$. 4x4 car rental at least 800 plus gas. Hotels are cheap around 20-30$ per night. Food maybe 30$ a day. I will stay for a month and likely dip into peru and colombia. I want to see the yasuni national forest. It's considered the most biodiverse place on the planet. There's a lot to see.

Sounds epic! We'll look forward to hearing about your journey!

Here are some screenshots of this short and sweet info download that was recently posted on TFF.
I sent the link to everyone I know interested in Casimiroa and have yet to discuss with anyone. I think it’s fascinating and am curious on what other Casimiroa enthusiasts think about this.

There is some great info in that study. Probably most useful is a list of "type 1" cultivars that do not produce pollen. Here is another study that outlines specific cultivars.

Reedo, Michelle is not dwarfing. I was told the large white sapote tree at the OC Fairgrounds which is about 15-20ft tall is a Michelle. It seems to be a normal size tree. I'll look for a photo I took and post it here for you. Fruit tastes good, not excellent. So maybe just average tasting to me, nothing stands out in the flavor.

Reedo,

I will trade you 3 cuttings of my seedling yellow sapote (C. Tetrameria) for your Walton cuttings. My Walton grafted branch is very small so I need to add more on my multi-grafted tree.

The taste of my yellow sapote is good, better than average tasting.

Sounds good. I have plenty of Walton scions to share. My tree is huge. It's loaded up with fruit for the first time, so I should have some photos and taste reports to contribute in Spring. Also, if you're on FB, Harvey has a white sapote page where he has shared photos and reviews for a number of varieties. It's the only place I've been able to find photos of certain varieties. You might check it out and see if there are photos of varieties you haven't fruit yet. https://www.facebook.com/WhiteSapoteFruit

Nice to see your opinion on yellow sapote (Casimiroa tetrameria) # 7 is in agreement with an old CRFG taste test.  CRFG #6 is out there, but most prefer CRFG#7.  I've posted this before, doing it again: using C. tetrameria as a rootstock for C. edulis severely dwarfs the white sapote down to 4 ft. Using C. edulis as a R/S for C. tetrameria makes a much smaller tree, about 8 ft. Both have remained  compatible for over 20 years and produce normal sized fruit.  It would be interesting to see what an interstock of various lengths would do.

If anyone has CRFG #7 scions, I'd love to experiment with some as intermediate grafts. I have about 50 C. edulis seedlings I was planning on grafting up for local folks in Santa Cruz. No one wants a 30' tree in their backyard. That could be really useful.

On a side note, I noticed Michele has a slightly fuzzy underside of its leaves. Does this indicate it's likely a E. edulis. x C. tetrameria hybrid? I've noticed it is growing painfully slow on an C. edulis seedling. It is about 12" tall white my Walton of the same age has been topped three times and is 15' tall. Perhaps Michele is another candidate for intermediate dwarfing?

Here are some images of Malibu #3. Another excellent selection. Very sweet without bitterness. Good vanilla-caramel flavor without any funkiness.

Has anyone tasted or grown Wilson white sapote? I believe this was a cultivar that circulated decades ago. A friend asked me to preserve it due to its contemporary rarity, but I can’t find any info on it. It’s supposedly a large fruit similar to McDill. If the fruit quality isn’t great, I’m not sure it’s worth saving, so any info would be a great help. Thanks!

They're slow to get going, but then accelerate. Mine fruit nicely under 50% shade cloth in a greenhouse. I have one full sun seedling outdoors, it looks great, but doesn't grow as well as the ones in part shade.

My opinion is that they are not that frost sensitive. Yes, the leaves will go purple, and defoliate, but even with my seedling in 4" of snow outdoors overnight, I didn't lose a single inch of branch. It was 30f for almost the whole night.

Wow, that's interesting. Thanks for the insight. I had one in full sun get burned pretty badly, and it basically completely defoliated, but has basically bounced back without any branch dieback. Sounds like they might be pretty tough.

I kept 2 25 gallon Pitangatoob's side by side on the westside, mid day sun protection and they both fruited very well.
I put them in full sun side by side near Downtown and they made no fruit.
I conclude they will grow & fruit better with dappled light or some shade .

I broke up the pair but visited one of the tree's yesterday  8)

Thanks! I planted 8 seedlings I grew out from seed from Steven Flit’s plant. They’re all in partial shade and have been doing fine. I think I’m just not accustomed to the slow growing of Eugenias.
