Besides the leaf tip salt burn, are the dark spots on the top set anthracnose? (This is an old image)

Could flies increase anthracnose? I notice them very often hanging on mango leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Strange papaya seeds?

what is the source of the photos? People fake stuff all the time, usually they leave out lots of information so you can't check anything.

There is a group of local Tunisian gardeners on facebook, I could ask for more photos but the person who posted them has a fair amount of legitimacy and I can guarantee that she has no photo editing skills.

Has anyone seen this before? It's like a papaya trying to mutate into an avocado.

Haha.

Really wonderful job! That specific cross looks divine. How is the taste?

Minus a nice watering system you can always take a plastic one gallon water jug. Or maybe milk came in it? One pin hole at the bottom and this will drip irrigate a new fruit tree. All kinds of other plastic containers can be used the same way. New fruit trees. At least hit them with garden hose every second day. And of course they are wood chip mulched 3" deep to bank the water.

Every time I water mango seedlings I get the same thought. So when you water a tree it seems to me quite impossible for the moisture to reach the bottom end of the taproot.
In my sandy soil for example, it gets really tough to dig farther as you get deeper unless you add some water to the bottom, so how can I help the taproot when watering if the added water doesn't get as deep as the end of the taproot?

I hope I am not sounding very confusing, let me know if what I'm asking does not make much sense.

How about Fruit Punch? Where does it come short?

Has anyone been through this before.

This is a small banana planted in sunny spot and it does get hot and sunny these days. Watering has been consistent.

For the last 4 or 5 new leaves, I have been noticing a dark spot ont the cigar leaf and as it emerges the side looks burnt and scarred.

It doesn't seem to affect the overall health of the leaf or plant, but I'm just trying to understand if the plant is trying to tell me something :)

Sapodilla seedlings are annoyingly slow.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango seedlings and sun protection
« on: May 06, 2020, 06:42:25 AM »
This is an almost 1 year seedling and here in a semi arid Mediterranean climate, it got hot pretty early and the sun is quite strong.

I was wondering if what we see here is a sign to shade it? Not sure if the photo is clear but it seems like the beginning of a discoloration in the leaves.

Thanks!

I'm just not a big fan of the texture after they thaw  :(

Can anyone identify the mango in the photo below? It is from a grafted tree growing in San Diego, but the owner doesn't recall which variety he planted. The photo was taken yesterday, December 3.

It reminds me of Palmer but most likely it isn't.

Put a sheet of paper towel over the seeds to pull them under water.

That's a good idea, although I still think most of these seeds are bad. I tried opening a few and they were almost hollow with some dark matter inside them...

These are 1 day old seeds.

43
Try putting them in dirt and keeping them warm for a couple months.  My experience is even very old dried cherimoya seeds all sprout.

I'm glad to hear that, a reason to stop blaming myself for overlooking the small bag despite the signs :)

44
Usually, the seeds will sink in about a week or so, from my experience

Interesting! there was a research article on Soursop seeds, and it recommended 72h, I don't think they tried longer.

45
Will do, thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya with no single viable seed - none?
« on: November 28, 2019, 05:47:27 PM »
I just had a cherimoya, washed the seeds and left them drying overnight. The next day to my surprise, not a single seed was viable aka floating.

Is that a common occurrence?

Thanks

KP sold at Gelson Hollywood.

Honey Gold is apparently a seedling of KP? Are you implying that it's very similar to Duncan?

We don't get any Australian mango in the northeast and I checked even the highest end stores... Peruvian ones are starting slowly...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is the best variety of loquat?
« on: November 05, 2019, 04:00:42 PM »
Already posted this elsewhere but the best Loquats i have ever eaten were from a seedling of a Brazilian fruit growing in Germany and producing fruit regularly despite the cold climate. This year it produced over 80 kg of huge, tasty fruits:

That's a fat fleshy one! I am surprised to see it growing in Germany, did the owner start it from seed?
