Definitely got fruits from the same seller cause i also paid $40/lb lol whats the best method for getting all the extra flesh off the seed ? Trying to plant these ones out

If you're in NJ and was exposed for any period of time, there is a chance the seeds died.  I notice that when i imported some varieties lat year, half of the whole batches just didn't germinate.  The route in which they flew made a difference.  If they sat on the tarmac in Japan/korea, goners.  So if they were sitting at all for long periods in NJ... but hopefully if they were in teh fruit, the flesh gave some protection from freezing the embryo.

If anyting start downriver and work your way up.

I'd look at Instagram tags and see if that pulls up any pictures and maybe connect with the owners and figure out when and where they acquired and go from there?  Too bad the thorntree was taken down, woudl've been good to find translators there.

Or DM Maryoto and Beni?  On IG find "Duriantraveler"

Updated one lot of mangosteens (7 seeds)

you should go see if lonely planet has their thorn tree forum still up and running. if they do, you can select by country and start a thread there with all your questions.  in addition to other travelers being active on that forum, there are many local guides/translators etc that hang out on that site.  you can possibly get good references for translator guides to help you search.  OR you contact lindsay gasik. she does some custom trip itinerary type stuff if you don't want to go on her tours.

What part of Thailand will have maprang? I’m planning to go later this year

all over. you can order from distributors or major fruit markets.
Once you go, I need to know where the good loot spots are but it sounds like they might be everywhere. I want to take a trip to SE Asia before I got to college and hopefully try stuff that are hard to come by here like marang, salak, durian, maprang, etc.

I'll PM you.

god, i love maprang a lot.

there are new varieties to be collected in Thailand. Just no one has done it yet.  Working on that for next year possibly.

Had some recently in Vietnam, tasty! Do the new varieties have thinner skin and better flesh to seed? Those were my two complaints.

my research indicates yes.  there's that cultural connection for thais and maprang so with that there are people out there making it bigger and better.

Grafted trees take  up to 10 years to bear fruit. And is antracnosis inmune
My grafted mayong chid took 3 years to fruit.

Looks like asian stores are starting to import them from some of the fruit sellers pics.

the prices are nuts.

if it's mayong chid, then it would be sweet and sour mix. Wan would be the sweet 'variety'

One other selling point is that its anthracnose resistant as well as if you choose, you can eat the skin. But don't do that if you're allergic to mango or sap or what not.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Where to buy boxes?
« on: January 19, 2023, 05:25:27 PM »
free boxes are the best, but remember that USPS now changed their oversize rates so even 25" is $2-4 difference.  Whatever the total linear inches is your goal to maintain. There's been times, off by an inch the price went from $29 to $60 for me.  Ended up going back and trying to make a custom box that fit the plant as well as the USPS rate calculator...it eats up your time.  Time is something can never gain back.

idk if i would use Red as a root stock.  Do you have sabara instead?  I thought there was discussion of having some issues as being a rootstock aside from its crazy growth habit. I could be off on my recollection.

If you are really interested PM me and I can let you know when I’m traveling. I’m always looking to bring like minded fun people who don’t mind mosquito and bug bites to find fruit off the beaten path. Costa Rica in February and Ecuador in March is in the works along with CAmeroon at end of July. :)
