I took these pictures from each side of the same mango tree (Carrie). The dark healthy looking leaves are from the South facing (sunnier) side. The chlorotic looking leaves are from the Northern facing shadier side. Everything else being totally equal.... would less direct sunlight cause this?

The shape is so much nicer! Great job. It always feels like a leap of faith when you start pugging away.

Nullzero I have Physical Graffiti and Haley's Comet

Luisport... I just eat them fresh like that. I like them a bit better when chilled but I will eat them fresh off the plant.

I just harvested the last of the 24 Dragon Fruits my trellis produced over the last few months. I was very impressed how sweet they were with highest brix reading at 18.4 The largest one shown on the scale in the photo below weighed 1.21 lbs!!.  I'm going to measure the brix of that one when I cut into it and add a picture of the inside of it. Considering I started this Dragon fruit trellis on Jan 1st 2012 from small cuttings I am very happy with its shape and productivity!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mamey Sapote Seed - Which end down?
« on: October 06, 2013, 10:40:12 PM »
Hello all. Not to hijack this thread, but i have a quick question. How do i plant a mamey seed that has pre sprouted within the fruit and has grown along taproot that is pressed against the hilum? Is it the same? will i have a bend in the taproot or what? Thanks in advance!
I would plant it with the tap root pointed straight down.

Nancy, I finally got a picture of my Lancetilla to post for you.
It is about 8 feet tall now. I tip pruned it back some about  month ago to reshape the canopy. These trees can be a bit scraggly if you don't shape them.

Nancy If the root ball ended up small enough for a 15 gallon pot with additional wiggle room for new root growth it should do fine. My Lancetilla is easily 9 feet tall and had a 5 foot wide canopy. I recently tip pruned it after up-potting it in order to give it a nicer shape. It is going through a nice growth flush since doing all that and it looks great. I am hoping for more than 3 mangoes next year!! I thought they were worthy!

Nancy
I would recommend when you are ready to move it to a pot. Go to a local nursery and ask them to sell you a nursery grade plastic pot somewhere in the range of a 35-50 gallon size.
And use a good quality potting mix. I have my Lancetilla in a 50 gallon potted up with Miracle Grow Moisture Control and it is doing amazing.  This year for the first time, after I potted it up to the 50 gallon, it produced 3 large mangoes between 2-1/2 and 3-1/2 lbs. And after I cut off the last one it started pushing growth like crazy and it looks healthier than ever before. I will take pictures tomorrow and post for you!!

I got to try a few nice Lancetilla mangoes from my tree this year for the first time.
I was so very excited and surprised how much I loved this mango after all of the negative or neutral comments posted on the forum. Mine were sweet with some spicy overtones that were kind of perfumey .....it reminded me very much of a cross of the Carrie mango and some Asian mangoes that have that strong perfumey aroma. They are late season....I still have one left hanging on the tree as of today! The two I harvested weighed 2lb 6oz and 3lb 2oz. Not bad for a first fruiting of a container grown mango tree!! I am happy now that I selected this cultivar.

Excellent job, Marin.  Lancetilla, at my house at least, can range from Good to Excellent in eating quality.  The flavor seems not to be everyone's "cup of tea" but like many of the mangoes I have collected, it can, with perfect ripeness and in a good year be quite an experience.  It seems to be somewhat inconsistent here and is subject to splitting and animal/bird attack.  When you get one to full size and maturity, it is something to behold. But, again, while its flavor can be complex in a good year, I am not sure I would apply spicy to the description. Again, this just may be a term definitional issue. Thanks for posting.  My Lancetillas have been gone for months now.
Harry I have one big Lancetilla left on my tree....I will designate it for a Harry taste testing. I will call you to smake a plan. It is still hard hanging on the tree.

Living vicariously through your photos..... maybe one of these upcoming years I would be able to make it.

Found this male Jackson chameleon on the ice cream bean tree. Their favorite fruit trees are that one and the rollinia. Here he poses in front of a mango:

That creature has cool eyes!!

Here is another photo at a different angle where you can see the horn on the tail end.

this giant caterpillar nearly completely defoliated 2 of my atemoyas and 2 of my sugar apple
It was 3 1/2 to 4 inches long and super aggressive
Does anyone know what kind it is?

Can any jackfruit be grown in a container?  I would be happy just to be able to grow any! :D
I have seen Jackfruit growing in containers and I have also seen them fruiting in large containers. You could definitely grow it in a container in PA. Whether you could get it to fruit there or not is another story. I suppose you could in a greenhouse or indoors with the right conditions.

Do you happen to know the name of the tree by any chance? ;D
J-31 and a few others. They are all seedlings. When upsizing the containers with each repot the tap root should be trimmed to keep it from wrapping around the bottom of the container. You will get smaller fruit growing in a container unless you have th space and conditions to allow the tree to grow to over 15 tall. I don't think a potted tree will grow a 20+ or bigger sized fruit until the tree gets to 15 feet tall or taller with a trunk with a diameter of greater than 8"

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Freezing Jackfruit
« on: August 03, 2013, 12:12:49 AM »
If you can, freeze the individual bulbs on a cookie sheet first then place them in zip top bag.  If not you have a giant chunk of jackfruit that you have to pry apart, though well worth the effort.
I freeze mango slices on a cookie sheet like Ethan mentioned, but if it is too much trouble for you to do that for the Jackfruit just put 6 =8 arils in a medium zip lock bag and lie the bag flat and separate the arils and freeze lying flat this way they won't freeze into a lump. This is how I do it and it works great, I like Jackfruit frozen much better than eating it fresh. It is so cold and refreshing in the heat of the summer and they will last a long time in the bags.

I went Jackfruit crazy and planted the following:

Golden Nugget
Black Gold
J-31
Amber
Berry

A hat tip to Sheehan who gave me the Amber and Berry.

I am looking to expand my collection and just planted some borneo red seeds and have some golden pillow seeds en route to me.  Can anyone suggest another cultivar that is worth planting?  I am looking to make a row of these lining my front gate so that gives me room for maybe 8 to 10 more.
That row of Jackfruit trees will be a site to see

MarinFla,

Congrats beautiful looking fruit. I bet it taste as good as it looks.
Thanks! I've eaten a few smaller ones already...I am surprised at how sweet they are compared to others I have tried (not mine). I can't wait to rest the brix level to actually quantify it.

But wait.....the larger the fruits get, the better/sweeter they are.  At least that has been my experience.  Nice growing!
Thanks Harry! I tested that dragon fruit with the refractometer and it measured at a brix level of 15.6

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragonfruit: how best to support?
« on: July 27, 2013, 08:37:08 PM »
Karen you could reinforce your pvc with rebar. I have rebar supporting underneath this. The wire fence and plastic lattice are wire zip-tied to the rebar.
It Started like this Jan 2012

Now it looks like this a year and a half later

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Another Pickering Mango thread...
« on: July 25, 2013, 04:02:28 PM »
Nancy, My Pickering is still holding 5 fairly large mangoes and they still haven't shown signs of readiness.
Prior to the late bloom that produced these mangoes I'd lost a lot of the foliage on the top of the tree. But it is starting to push out some new growth again so I expect that will all fill back in. It is growing in a 25gal. pot. I am going to upsize it to a 50gal after I harvest those mangoes!! (those are Jackfruit seedlings in the background)

I highly recommend you go with a root tip pruning product so you can greatly reduce the need for upcanning.  Chemical - Griffin's Spin-Out or MicroKote.  Air/light pruning systems such as RootMaker products.

Pickering's gonna be my next addition to my greenhouse.

Mark

Can you give me more info/explain? How big do those root tip pruning pots come?
