I planted one this year around LaBelle FL zone 9b.
It is a grafted tree on Osage orange rootstock. I will know for sure in a few years but I read
they should fruit in July or August in the south. I plan to get another one from http://hiddenspringsnursery.com/plants.html#Melon_Tree
$28 including shipping. The tree I got earlier this year is doing very well and reminds me of a Mulberry

Achetadomestica, I ordered an allegedly self fertile, grafted one from Edible Landscaping.. What do you think? Would it fruit? Do you order male and female tress from Hidden Springs Nursery?

Thanks

Onur you might hit up Wayne Clifton and see how his che is doing since he's also in the Bradenton area. I think he'd put it in a year or two ago in February, and was pretty excited about it when I was there.

If a male is present the fruit will be very seedy. I was also going to get a plant from Edible Landscaping but they
never got one in stock and I ended up getting my tree from Englands nursery in Kentucky. My sister lives in Kentucky and picked it up
on the way down to Florida. I also got a female grafted tree.

If planting here in Bradenton I would not put them in a suntrap area.  Put them in the coolest part of your yard, with shade in the afternoon.

For rootstock Osage Orange (not orange family, but Mulberry ) Grows Native In Texas Louisiana , and florida

I'd try to get those to graft to , and not one from a Nursery using one that adapted to IL. or northern Climates

I expect Most nurseries use a Cold hardy rootstock for northern people so they do not die.

I know A lot of Texas Members bring up how these Osage Orange trees can have big thorns ,and are a pain
so I would source rootstock from the Texas members here.

Still really want to know if down south they have a flavor
as I see some people get types with little flavor, but Mine I tasted were good.
I may plant some in Louisiana for friends as well.

Thinking of what I just said
I have Northern Rootstock (lots)

Anyone have Texas Seeds ?

I want to grow for My New Orleans friends, and also Guerilla  grow in a park (and city park with permission)

I could pay, maybe trade.

Are you referring to Osaka orange seeds? I can source them right now. Tons of seeds but they are not from Texas. Currently, seeds would be from fallen fruit Nashville, TN.

I meant Florida Members Might want to source FArthest south Osage orange seeds for root stock.

I gathered a Large Backpack last year so I have hundreds  growing
Unfortunate for me I have had many more seeds ,
but one day after cleaning I left them out one day,
and a mouse ate so many out side.

This looks to be a hot item right now a lot of Nurseries Are selling out pretty tree

Mango madness I have ate them just not south they have a fig like taste or water melon like taste
would be good for drying as well with only a Female they will be seedless
So if a Nursery is saying to buy two they are lying so you buy more trees.

I would probably be growing out JErry Lehmans variety or one from Cliff England or Northern fruit explorers NAFEX (and Indiana Nut growers)
and would like a male of some species  to breed, but afriad not enough room at my house (only friends houses farms ) for that.

Thank you for the Tenessee offer though for root stock

I don’t understand why they are always grafted to OO? I mean, I took a cutting once from my female and it rooted perfectly fine in perlite. Very similar to mulberry cuttings.. I cant take any more because my female is so small or otherwise I would have! Also whoever said to put it in sporadic sun down here in the south is right. Mine is growing right next to a white mulberry of all things, and the branch that was in full continuous sun got baked, while the branch under the mulberry canopy is faring way better. Although, I can’t say the dead branch wasn’t due to a slight drought, so it may have been drought conditions and full sun that did that branch in. Anyways..
