AVOCADO VARIETY ID HELP..... PLEASE LOOK AT THE PHOTOS
« on: September 17, 2012, 09:39:35 PM »
After much consideration I have decided to top work my seedling avocado tree. It is just a monster that I let grow out of control prior to getting infected with the tropical fruit growing disease. I plan to cut the seedling in the next couple of weeks and graft 4 different varieties. I am in need of some opinions. While I realize these opinions  are all subjective, it is better than nothing as I don't have time to try them all prior to getting started.
Here are the following varieties I have narrowed it down to, however I am open to suggestions:
I was thinking of picking from the following 6 varieties
Miguel (July-Sept) 'b' type flower
Day (July-Sept)
Simmonds (June-Aug) 'a' type
Florida Haas (Oct-Nov) 'a' type
Bacon  (Sept-Oct) 'b' type
Oro Negro (Nov-Jan) 'b' type
Monroe (Nov-Feb) 'b' type

I also had considered Lula, Brogdon, Choquette but cut them from the list. I really like and prefer the rich creamy texture and nutty flavor of the Haas Avocado.

AND I NEED TO COLLECT BUDWOOD!!! ANYONE ABLE TO HELP ME ?? I WILL DRIVE TO PICK IT UP TO AVOID ANY INCONVENIENCE TO ANY VOLUNTEERS!

Thanks in advance for all input and help!!! Marin
Need an ID for This Avocado
It was picked shiny green as you see it whole in this pic, and turns the color burgundy/deep purple when it is fully ripened

This shows the cut/ inside of two (2)ripened avocados and one (1) whole uncut green/unripened

This shows the stages of ripening, fully ripened on the right is a deep color

Have you considered Day? Mine is in its first year so has not produced yet, but was highly recommended by Richard at Excalibur when I told him I wanted a high oil content guacamole avocado. Also, when I visited ECHO last weekend, the Day variety was one of their featured "season extending" fruit trees. You are welcome to budwood. Although it is small, it has doubled in size in 3 months. If you are using Har (which I recommend), we may be able to time our top works so that  he can bring you my budwood. Of course, you are welcome to visit any time.

The fruit looks like Custers Red (based on color and your description though the neck is "slightly" more stretched than I have seen and the seed is a little odd shaped)...if it is, it should not be picked till it has some red blush coloration on it.

For early season I would go with Day; mid season Wilson Seedless; would also go with Wurtz and Lula...honorable mention is Marcus Pumpkin, Monroe and Ore Negro (I have not had it but descriptions "sound" good).

Now, I know you are trying to go with A & B types however I am not sure that is really necessary...guess that is your choice and other will give opinions that weigh on both sides.

One thing I would consider is choosing varieties your friends DON'T have...this way you are able to share and have more selection.

As you said, these are all subjective and final decision must be made by you...

Why did you eliminate those 3?

I personally have doni for early season, june.  Simmonds for july 15-sep 15 and i really enjoy the sweeter taste of this variety.  Then monroe for dec to feb 15.  Doni has smooth and very mild taste.

Choquette because of alternate bearing, Brogdon because it was mid-season and I thought Bacon and Hass might be a better pick but I did notice Brogden has great cold tolerance, Lula looked good too but oro-negro and monroe seemed like better late season choices from what I read.
After more reading Simmonds might be deleted in favor of Miguel or Day. What I read about Wurtz caught my attention too.
Many of these newer varieties are not on the variety viewers...and I had never heard of them before. This forum is great for getting info!

Marin - since you are just entering 'cado season, my suggestion would be to taste them over the coming months and go from there.  Would hate for you to pick varieties based on one person's recommendation, or worse, PI's viewer which is nothing more than one person's opinion and THEIR marketing tool (kind of like Fairchild and their "curator choice"), wasting your time to find out you are not thrilled with the choices and wished you had picked something different.

They claim a low freeze tolerance. What has been you experience? At the end of the day, it will which budwood I can locally (within 100-150 miles) obtain!

Simmonds is better than Miguel, imo. Miguel is pretty mild to put it nicely.

Bacon is a really good avocado but the production is only so-so here.

Oro Negro sounds like a winner but is still pretty new. FL Hass also is still kind of unproven.

Miguel is just as bad in that regard. Both Simmonds and Miguel are 'pure breed' West Indian types, so poor cold tolerance comes with the territory on those.

Totally agree! Thinking Day may be my early season choice.

I would stay away from TopT for any factual info to rely on.

Here is a list of cold tolerant varieties from Echo, however in your location it is not that much of an issue:

The info TT gave conflicted with UF, ECHO and Pine Island.
I wish I had time to try them all!!

Marin, I am not sure even the west Indian avocados are going to be any more cold sensitive than a mango tree.   You might not have to worry in your location although I
Don't know exactly where Deerfield beach is.

A seed from any proven cold hardy tree is a good one. Mine has survived with no damage at all with all the freezes for the last 7 years.

The Day avocados I have had have been a little smaller and ripen to a dull green with a less defined neck.

Isn't that the hardee avocado?  Go to pine island's avocado viewer and
See what you think

Marin, that is probably Brogdon. Is the skin really thin on those fruits?
