My Top 10 Favorite Mango Varieties, Whats Yours?
« on: April 18, 2023, 12:31:48 PM »
Top 10:
Coconut Cream
Guava Mango (Guamango)
Pickering
Orange Sherbet
Rosigold (tasted like floral roses to me)
Lemon Zest
Nam Doc Mai
PPK (lemon meringue)
Buttercream
And believe it or not I like the shitty fibrous turpetine mango

RECENTLY PLANTED
Creme Brulee (I want to know more about this variety and haven't tasted it)
Casturi Mango
Lancetilla
Irwin

I don't have a shortage of planting space so I did a couple less desirable varieties.

My 2023 revised list.

I'll prefer my list with this:
I tend to my mangos on the sweeter side with a firmer texture.
A lot of the intensely flavored mangoes have a very short window to pick and another small window to eat.
If after 10 years into the world of ZHPP mangos, picking 1000s of mangos, and eating more then I know it's hard to get some consistency.
So I'm really using the best version I had of each mango.

Comparing strictly on eating experience (taste, aroma, texture) in no order.

Lemon Zest
Mulgoba
Bailey's Marvel
Zinc
Sugar Loaf*
Buttercream*
Valcarrie
Cotton Candy
Pina Colada
Orange Sherbet

*Still working out how to actually pick them at the right time

Great list here thanks everyone for sharing. I donít think Iíve even tasted 10 mango varieties in my life haha but hope to change that soon. Not many options here at the grocery stores or markets in SoCal.

In no particular order:
Pickering
Orange Sherbet
M-4
Sugar Loaf
Fruit punch
Edward
Super Alphonso
Karen Michelle
Malika
Lemon Zest
When it comes to productivity, reliability and disease resistance the list narrows to:
Pickering, Edward, M-4, Orange Sherbet
Lemon Zest is a particularly troublesome tree, I wouldn't plant it again. Malika is a light and unreliable producer.

Amrapali might be a good substitute for Mallika.  Also, how do you feel about PPK?

PPK and Lemon Zest are very MBBS prone. Great tasting, but difficult to grow fruit to maturity in my yard.

Pineapple Pleasure*
Sugarloaf*
Fruit Punch
Peach cobbler
CAC
lemon zest
Orange sherbet
Sweet Tart
Cecilove
Baileys marvel*

* I grow these varieties.
If I can add a number 11 itís ďseacrest/triple-SecĒ

If you ask me about a mango trees qualities and not just taste of fruit I have a whole different list.

I like only 3 mango varieties tastewise
1. Alphonso
2. Dasheri
3. Payari
Rest varieties I tasted were not good enough.

I'll jump in here, since I have PPK. I had gone to Truly Tropical years ago to buy a Sweet Tart tree. While there, Chris was going on about how people loved PPK, and she always sold out of it. So even though I didn't have room for it, I bought both trees. Boy, am I glad I did! They're 2 of my 3 favorite mangos (of the ones I have), and taste totally different. PPKs are sweet and citrusy. They kind of don't even taste like a mango, but I don't mean that in any negative way. My only criticism is that its production is quite variable for me. This year I got zero PPKs! That said, my tree is still pretty young. Still, I would never be without a PPK tree.

In no particular order:
Pickering
Orange Sherbet
M-4
Sugar Loaf
Fruit punch
Edward
Super Alphonso
Karen Michelle
Malika
Lemon Zest

Interesting, as I also have a light harvest with less PPK's this year vs last year.

Almost all other varieties have more fruit this year vs. last year.

All my mango trees are the old original Florida varieties, since I live in a small town I only had a few varieties to choose from the nurseries and big box stores near me at the time when I was planting my mango trees 10-17 years ago. Lucky for me I enjoy all the mango varieties I planted. Carrie is so far the only mango I do not like that I've tasted, It had a mediciny after taste (hard to explain) which I disliked. But in all fairness I've probably only tasted 10-12 varieties since I started growing mangoes.

I have Glenn, Cogshalls, Maha, Keitt...Glenn being my favorite. I used to have Pickering and really loved that mango...it's a long story and I no longer have the tree. That is one I would plant again but I have more than enough fruits for me and several of my neighbors to share so I guess I don't need another tree. It's a lot of work for the first 5-6 years till they get established especially when we get the few occasional freeze here, protecting them is a lot of work! Right now all the trees are established and are on auto pilot, on their own at this point. Finally reaping the benefits of all my very hard labor...until the next severe freeze that is!
