OT How to keep cats from landscape
« on: April 24, 2023, 11:10:44 AM »
My next door neighbor cats keep doing their business in my landscape. I planted some annuals and put down mulch. Now her 2 cats have a favorite place to pee and poop. How can I deter them without harming them.

I tell my mom that they eat cats around here, they tried to pass something outlawing the eating of cats and dogs in Hawaii, but she just laughs it off.

An array of wooden bamboo skewers (dull end up is fine) to make it difficult for small animals to walk.  At my old house we had cats and they would lay on my seed starting trays, putting toothpicks in it stopped them

Ive tried plastic spike mats, chicken wire around the trees, cayenne pepper, and boulders.

The cats just figure out away to work around whatever I do.

At this point Im just trying to keep them in the backyard.

I got a motion activated sprinkler last year, but it had too many blind spots, and sometimes the cats would slowly walk right past it without triggering it. It was very satisfying to watch them flee when it did work, though.

I planted a new bed with wildflowers, Passiflora incarnata, and Morus nigra seedlings just yesterday, and already today the cats have dug up about a quarter of it and left their nasty nuggets of filth. There are at least 4 cats I see regularly in my yard, including one that's feral, so there's not much I can do other than fencing, sprinklers, and wishful thoughts.

Motion activated sprinklers are awesome, and fun with a motion activated camera.

Multiplie sprinklers and cams work best

I have heard cats hate citrus smell and spraying with orange essence helps.

I'm dealing with this and it seems like citrus peels help.

I think the royal class eating dog fell out of fashion in the late 1800's.
Maybe some people bring that culture with them from elsewhere.
