Perssimon Festival 11-22-13 Irvine, CA
« on: November 04, 2013, 11:56:39 AM »
I just got the flyer below from Isabel and thought I would post it in case anyone here was interested in attending.  The pictures are from 2001 when they added another row of trees to fill out the collection.  I am going to try and make it.  Anyone from San Diego interested in carpooling?

My 2nd favorite fruit " Highly underrated " in my Opinion  next to Pomegranate  ..i think.
A good Perssimon is as good as any Mango i have tasted .. in my opinion.
I wish i could attend . I am all the way in Phoenix. Enjoy and thanks for posting Sven.
Please take some pics and inform us about the different varieties available ..maybe with some growing tidbits . Thanks

Richard, did you take the VIP tram tour? I am thinking about going, but don't know if I should sign up for the VIP tour.

I do not remember there being a tram tour last year,  but it sounds like fun to have a chance to go out into the groves.

Need to check my calendar, but if I'm available that weekend I will go.  I'm in San Diego, so carpooling could be an option.

Sven, I plan to go, but have to check my calendar at work next week to be sure I can take the day off, since it is on a Friday.  I live in Carlsbad, we could meet at one of the Park and Rides off the I-5.

Mangomanic12, if you love persimmons this is a must go. I have attended the last two events and if you are someone like me who is not too fond of the fruit you are going to be surprise.

If you guys can go and want to carpool I’m definitely in.  I can drive and my truck fits 5 but it only gets 9 MPG so if anyone else is willing to drive it would save us some money and I’d be more than happy to pay my share.

There are many interesting varieties at the station that most people have never tried.  It’s definitely worth a trip out.  There is one with brown streaks or color inside that you can eat hard like a fuyu that is very good.  My favorite was always a tiny grape sized fruit that dries on the tree.  They are seedy but have great flavor when they are dry.  It’s one they use as a rootstock not for the fruit but I always liked it.

I like the tiny ones too. I think it's called lotus. they're astingent fresh but the dried fruits taste like dates.

There's not enough vacation for me to attend this year. It should be good for those that can go. Last year they had bags of cherimoya for sale.

Do you know if they allow kids at this event?  I want to go, but will have to tow my two daughters along (age 3 & 1)

Thanks Fyliu, that's the one, I couldn’t remember the name.

MMMMommy, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to bring your kids.  The flyer says “open to the general public” and most events at the field station are pretty informal.

Do they sell trees or fruits there? I'm looking for 1-2 persimmon trees.
Thanks,

Thanks,
They're not allowed to sell fruits. But if you buy a ticket, they can exchange it for a bag of fruits;)
It's not a nursery business so they don't propagate trees for sale.
You will see and taste labeled fruits of available varieties. Someone will make a presentation about persimmons and answer any questions.
