Mango: what other varieties that look like Mahachanok fruits?
« on: October 20, 2021, 12:59:30 AM »
I bought a Cat Hoa Loc from Top but it was a mislabeled tree. The fruits look similar to Maha but a little bigger, less 'S' shape, not smell strong as Maha, and mostly yellow with less red blush as Maha near the stem . I'd like to know what it is.
Sorry I didn't take pic and season was over, but I still have some Maha on the trees.

Any ideas?

Could be NDM, but NDM has more pointed beak and uniform yellow when ripe. This fruit might have a little red tint and rounder beak.

Found a pic. When ripen it has more yellow than some pink which mostly near the stem.

Its texture and taste similar to MAha but less acidity and lack of aroma.

So here is picture of a Maha next to the unknow fruit that looks similar to Maha but has no perfume as Maha. Maha is the smaller one. I hope someone can help ID this fruit.

You might look over top tropicals availability list and narrow down
what it could be. I still think it could be NDM and it is a more common
mango that makes sense would be easy to substitute? How does it taste?
Is the tree in full sun?

"Is the tree in full sun?"

It's in full sun. Taste: very similar to Maha but no strong perfume. I don't have NDM and haven't tasted one yet, but I believe NDM has a pointed beak than this more rounded beak. I could be wrong.

I have NDM and it doesn't appear to be it.  Lots of the Asian varieties has a similiar shape but I've noticed 2 types of shape related to what alot of people call the beak.  The point of the beak for NDM is always pointing down. The pictures appears to be pointing more to the side. A side by side comparison, NDM is to the right and the solo picture also is NDM. It sometimes fills out nicely when ripe and the beak looks more round but the point will always point down.  If your ever interested in some mango scion exchange I would love to get maha or both. The color on both your fruits looks awesome.

I’d love to trade for NDM. Will PM you for the scions.
Thanks for the information on the beak .
