Tropical Fruit Discussion / 'Rosendo Perez' sapodilla
« on: March 20, 2024, 08:21:19 AM »
Just harvested 2, larger than large, sized fruits from my 7gal tree for the first time. Got it from TopTropicals in May 2022 as a 3gal and pretty much kept it in the nursery shade till stepping up in October 2023. At the time prior to purchasing, I think only Hopkins Nursery was propagating this and then TopTropicals had it available (I think they graft their own now. Not sure). I think Rosendo Perez was someone significant in Florida horticulture in the 1900s. There is an atemoya and caimito/ star apple named in his honor. This sapodilla could be a recent release. As a collector, I just had to buy :) and investigate for myself. Will sample this evening.

I waited as long as I could for the 'school bus orange' color :) but I finally had a chance to taste cv. "Tori" (a selected seedling from My Kids Nursery in Central FL) this morning. Fruits seems to get  big and round (consistent with other fruit on the tree) with white flesh. On first bite, very juicy and sweet with a nice mild hint of citrus. "Refined" is what came to mind. The skin was thin and had 2 seeds in it. I've been using organza bags (4"x4" walmart) to protect the fruits from birds and it working so far. Tree was obtained from GreenDreams nursery. This May would be 2 years in ground and barely 3ft tall. More loquats fruits from this and other cvs to come (Oliver, Yehuda, Zesty, SES#2 etc). Please share your loquat impressions for this season was well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ripening Green Sapote
« on: February 11, 2023, 12:42:45 PM »
So I ordered some green sapote fruit (5lbs) from Lara Farms and I was expecting 2 or 3 but got like 11 lol. They are about tennis ball size. I've been wanting to try this fruit forever as most accounts contrasting them to mamey sapote....tasters of both prefer green sapote (and I fine mamey sapote delicious). So my question is what's the best way to counter ripen them? Covered/uncovered but breathable? The fruit I received have some patches of orange (ripe?) with green but are hard to the touch.

Psidium cattleyanum. I have a 12ft tree that's into it's second week of fruit ripening right now. It did not even flinch with the back to back sub 25 degrees F my FL 9B zone in early February 2022. Everything else that was exposed was fried unless during that time it was dormant. These are so flavorful and easy to eat! One or two seeds can be big versus the bunch so be careful when chewing. But most of all the skin isn't as off putting to me like Psidium guajava. Just get a handful and pop em in your mouth like peanut M&Ms.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida Prince peaches in Central FL
« on: May 16, 2020, 09:06:11 PM »
Anyone else harvesting this and or any other low chill varieties?
Harvested two fruit this month. The first was lack luster- only the texture was like a peach. But the second one....my my. Delicious!!! Brix was surprisingly low at 15 (Tasted sweeter). Granted, my tree is still in its 3 gal pot but I'm thoroughly impressed and looking to get more.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit in Publix (major FL chain grocery)
« on: February 02, 2020, 02:55:04 PM »
Was surprised to see this 18lb Jackfruit in a Publix near me (9B). Product of Mexico #3454. Imported by Coast Tropical (based in San Diego?). Had some ripening and soft areas around it. It was only $20. Thought I'd gamble :D. Pictured next to a Hasya sappo (from a 3gal potted tree).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Punta Gorda" carambola
« on: June 26, 2019, 08:02:19 PM »
Anyone knows the detailed story? Aside from being....possibly....chance seedling. From Punta Gorda? :D :D
The leaves looked more robust (thicker and dark green) than similarly mature leaves from other cvs. I've seen.

Some help identifying these garcinas would be greatly appreciated (rows from left to right, column from top to down). some might be lemon drop, achacariu, dulcis.
Thanks.

I take it these are all these are the same variety  (described as white flesh, crunchy, big fruit) and/or a marketing ploy for the OCD fruit tree collector?

p.s. it was a PIN tag.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dr Earth soil mixes no longer in SoFla ?
« on: September 22, 2018, 10:28:36 AM »
I been to HomeDepots in Miami, Broward, Polk and Manatee county. Does HD still sell DR. Earth soil mixes in FL? Dr. Earth website shows only west coast and east coast for their soil mixes. Its a shame cause they were really good for my potted plant mix and the soil looked and smelled rich. My plants loved it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / can the peanut butter tree take wet feet?
« on: July 17, 2018, 09:33:54 PM »
Anyone knows or has experience? It was doing fine for about 9 months then with the daily summer afternoon showers the past 2-3 weeks, it started to decline. Have a Geffner that did the same thing. Leaves looked wilted.

Like the tittle says, I want something that can take the rare freeze with a fast growth rate. I plan on the occasional trimming (8-9ft) with a spread no more than 10ft wide. Was looking at neem but read that it can't take anything less that 30 o F. Murraya koenigii (curry tree) is a fast grower (I see some in Broward neighbourhoods) and the trimming can be used as mulch. Podocarpus was on the list but it seems like a slow grower for my needs. Recommendations welcomed. Bamboo is expensive :D. Looking to run a 200ft length for the windbreak.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grumichima and Pitomba flowering
« on: February 27, 2018, 05:37:45 PM »
Anyonelses? At my 9B location, 1 of my 3 inground purple/red Grumichima trees is flowering for the first time. They're over 5 ft and been inground since October/November 2017. The other 2 have swollen buds so hopefuly they'll be flowers. The pitomba I bought at Truly Tropical around the same time and its about 3 ft tall. Never tasted pitomba some I'm hoping I'll like it. Both took the cold like a champ.
