Critical time for Cerrado Species!
« on: October 27, 2012, 11:46:35 PM »
This transitional time of the year is critical for the cerrado species!   They hate the winter chill, mixed with high moisture in the soil!!

Keep them protected from the rains and moisture(particularly the roots!)! Yet don't let them get bone dry!

Keep them in maximum sunlight, but don't let them get cooked!

It will be a real trick for those who've planted these species in the ground...Unfortunately I don't think most species will endure the conditions we are about to experience soon, in the next few weeks.

I've pulled all of my cerrado species out of the rain, and under my awnings and into my screened in porch...the only draw back is now they are in much less sunlight!  It would be optimal to have a clear roof over them, made of plastic or fiberglass (or something similar).

Good luck to those of you who are trying to keep these cerrado plants alive, you're pioneering efforts are appreciated by me and others!  and should be ground breaking if you can fruit some of these!!!

Yeah I'm struggling with wild temp swings right now! It was in the low 80's a couple days ago and then down to 34 F last night and then 32 F tonight! So far I have been able to keep the inside of the greenhouse above 52 F with the lowest setting on my propane heater! This why I love this hobby! The constant challenges!

Ed,

last year I had some nasty temp swings from about 88-35F, in one day...the rollinia could handle it...the guanabanas, not so much.

I think you will pull through just fine!

Best of luck!
